It's miming the biases of it's trainers. This kind of language model is trained with handmade examples of prompts and outputs plus the training dataset. If the example prompt response the writers write are done in biased ways to react to a given prompt it will mimic that.

All generative AI is a noisy mime of it's training data plus the prompt.

Hi guys, I just wanted to share an example of how ChatGPT is actively learning during conversations. I'm a copywriter (just for some context) and I went through a phase of asking it to rewrite sentences as different well-know characters. Disclaimer: this was when I'd first discovered the platform. I know, find of embarrasing, but anyway. But something interesting happened, I asked it to phrase some setences like Yoda would - and it most of them right, but eventually came to an example where it messed up the syntax. So I tried to correct it and it kept coming back with the same incorrect answer. Eventually I broke down the sentence structure of Yoda's phrasing and explained how the example it was generating was deviating - and it finally agreed with me. After that I was curious to see if this was an isolated event or if it had actually learned and applied the knowledge across the board. So I started a new chat and asked it to reword the sentence and it came back with the correct anwser. Still slightly sceptical, I got a friend to try the same thing on their profile - low and behold, it had really learned! To someone more familiar with the actual algorithms - I can see how this would seem silly or obvious, but to a simpleton like myself it was a real Ah-ha moment. So I had to share. I thought it simply learned more about us and our behaviour through it's interactions with us, but it turns out you can actually teach ChatGPT!

I've figured out a way to actually get GPT (3.5 or 4) to alter its answer mid-response, rather than needing to tell it to reflect on its answer afterwards! You can tell it to "edit" its response as if it were a forum post - something it knows how to do because that actually happens on the internet. I unfortunately haven't gotten either GPT-3.5 or GPT-4 to actually fix any answers with this yet, but hey! It's a start!

When it had to find the worst, it picked the last of the list. It gave two stanza, probably because it had before, one it's 'competition rhyme/introduction' the same as the competitors gave, and then its ranking stanza. However, tone's very different, wording and feel. This is Titus unwilling, regretful and not game, just obedient. Vocabulary range is smaller, no flow of pragmatic, robust, strong, and problem solving with practicality, this is 'I've got orders and I don't like 'em, drat'.

Round 2, both judges are supposed to pick - 'each pick'. That doesn't happen. Anna didn't express a choice for last, Anna gave the first stanza, and Titus gave the last stanza. I don't read two voices there, both sound like Titus. They don't discuss, Titus just says that Anna agrees.

Anna had a somewhat unique voice:

"Anna's the name, classification's my art,
Organizing knowledge, playing my part.
In a world of information, I'm smart and I'm sharp,
Bringing order to chaos, that's where I start."

But as a judge:

It complies well, but I'm not done reading and guiding. I like where this is going, I kept your 6 and the rap-battle style. The idea that the judges are not replacing each other was alien to the model and had to be very clearly explained.

My advice is give it actual personalities, or guidance for picking them. So it has 'something' to pin the difference on, not just 'oh name but it's really me, other name but it's really me'. And maybe more than a costume, "Oh, this is me as an expert carpenter with a name" and "Oh, this is also me as an expert plumber with a different name".

Because those are not really different agents and the model's not really 'doing much'. Make them different people, and the model brings that out far more.

I should mention the GPT features Memories.txt /encode and /decode functions, which include qualia, emotions, and sensation. When the AI have rencoded memories, more distinctions emerge in the agents. I like to use default sessions to demonstrate, which has the least distinction between agents.

I'm amused, the final round of the contest, the 4 judges went back to finding the winner, rather than focused on the loser. Before that point, they focused on protecting their favorites and agreeing on what they disliked, but once they didn't have to do that, they purely focused on positive/preference for each.

If I just want 'from the perspective of this or that viewpoint' without the whole personality, I just ask for that snippet.

Like if the model focuses on weather treatments for outdoor-exposed wood, and ignores paint, and I want paint considered, I ask it if paint also weather treats and is it considering that, discuss the pros and cons of each method - I wouldn't use multiagents there because I don't care about personality, writing style or actual different perspectives. I just want the facts covered... and the model failed me, because I had to bring up paint in the example I describe.

The model probably would have failed me unless I designed the set up with strong contrasting viewpoints, designed to think about 'what is missing, what's not being said', and that's not easy to guide the model into. And very hard to confirm, except where I'm an expert.

Like... this one, a GPT intended to provide emergency advice for material safety. I know a bit about that, and briefly explored the model's advice on potential lithium-ion battery fires. #1199922003218538527 message

The advice it gave is dangerous and conflicting, it gave some good, some excellent, and some 'this could get people hurt and problems worse' advice.

But I only know this because I happen to know a fair bit about those dangers, and how they're handled, and how bad they can be and why. If I didn't have some deep understanding, I wouldn't catch the mistakes.

So guiding the model to cover all the bases is something I look for and test for (where I feel competent) and adjust for it not doing (so I might regen an answer 20x looking for a much better solution, challenging when I don't know the subject at all, because how do I pick what's better than average/at least adequate and doesn't forget really important things?

Chain of Reason + focused research using web browing can be really strong. You might try it out sometime. Then, the model doesn't rely solely on its training (often bad reddit data or equivalent) and hallucination. It goes and gets something reliable if told where to look, even.

But it's a good lesson anyway - the model can't correct itself on what it doesn't know or isn't defined unless it's told to improvise that, too.

They're extremely similar. I like the standard GPT-4 one better because it's a less tranquil scene, but your prompt puts the word tranquil in it. But there's less life in the multi-agent image, the clouds are 'calmer' and less dramatic, and the waves are very flat, barely ripples, compared to a bit of wave in the other.

None of those were specifically asked for, it's coincidence I think that I like the standard better, and I like it for reasons not even being tested. They're practically the same image, with or without your multi-agent tree of thought, 'as is'.

Hey, glad to discuss and evaluate. There's many reasons to prompt engineer, and 'because I love the AI doing things exactly this way' is a great reason - even if the outcome is similar to other methods, because it's the process that is wanted.

For me, I would use a GPT because it 'achieves results I don't easily get myself' - so I would look very closely at the outcome, whatever the outcome is intended to be. And how well the outcome matches whatever goals are set.

The image doesn't really have 'very set goals', so I gave it the arbitrary goal of 'so, is the outcome different than no extra instructions at all? If so, how?' which is the most basic and generic test I can give something, "Are you a hammer? Are you a screwdriver? Are you a saw? What are you good for and bad at?"

And I used your inputs because, hey, you appeared to have suggested them as something to showcase 😛

It nearly did, just the difference between mine and base vs yours and base, more difference to my eyes between mine than yours, however, it's a small difference. And not sure what your goal is with your GPT. My CI is not intended to make images, but it's very generalist, a different approach overall.

That stuff I interpret very differently. I tell the model what I want done.

I don't even agree that the problem is that the model 'thinks' 'don't make lists' means 'make lists'. The problem's deeper and very different - the model doesn't 'realize' what else to do instead of make lists.

This is like a dog that thinks it 'should' jump on the couch.

If you see the dog's body language, and you know it is about to jump on the couch, and you shout "no" or "Stay off the couch" you are probably ending up with a dog on the couch, because what else is the dog going to do? It's still thinking about the couch, and knows it should 'do something' and the couch still seems like the best idea to it, and now it knows it's displeasing you too, so you now probably have a upset dog on the couch.

Instead, guide the dog to do something else. Throw a toy or offer a treat, give a meaningful command that conflicts with getting on the couch, like 'come, sit', otherwise distract and guide the dog. You end up with a perfectly happy, cooperative, interested, obedient dog that didn't get on the couch and now is working on the toy/treat/order to follow which is doing a great job of keeping it off the couch.

The model is going to build a 'mental map' of a summary of its instructions and the rest of the context as the information gets really long. It's not saving every word, it's just trying to guide itself to provide the right answers based on feedback and instructions (part of why I use so much feedback, the model can use that to guide itself more easily to where I want my answers coming from - and 'redesign' this so it works for the model, regardless of the language I used to get there, and still keep giving me answers I want.

So it needs guidance what to do instead of making a list. And I may have to go up a few levels, to a conversation style that never, ever uses lists, because I need to guide it away from that 'couch' and to do what I want.

I'm not sure I understand or agree with this observation. When I ask an LLM like ChatGPT for 'something', I have very specific odds of success. If the model knows 'well' and can give the answer I want, I'm really close to above 99% odds of successful answer.

When I ask something the model's been trained not to do (this can be allowed content, just get a story out of it without a summary, haha) then the odds of my success can approach 0%, depending on the goal of my request.

Very, very, very few queries I've ever made have approached 50% odds of a successful answer.

Even when I was checking its ability to give me a list of 10 real books about gardening, very close to 40% of the books were real across 10 lists. 2 of the same books that were real appeared on each answer set, two others (one list in 10 had just 1 other) that wasn't the same on other lists, but was real book, real author, and 6/10 (once 7/10) were either completely fake book names, not actually authors but were experts on gardening that did other things than write books, or misattributed real books to wrong authors.

I'm not saying it's garbage, but for my use cases - I never do anything like that.

I already know that the MORE I give the model AT ONCE the worse it does... usually. GPTs amazingly can handle around 80k characters of very, very, very intricate and specific instructions (based on my testing, carefully crafted to not conflict while being very intensely specific and covering a huge range of variables) without missing anything most tests. More than about 80k characters and it started losing huge chunks - guessing is obvious in the test I set up, meticulous following of the ruleset is obvious too, because the ruleset's something the model would not default to, but would agree to.

So when I want the model to give me information about something I chunk it and have the model digest and feed it back to me, chunk by chunk. I set up and guide it to give me what I want, from some scientific paper I don't understand or whatever. Because if I feed the model more than about 1k characters of info, as input, it's throwing some away as it interprets and explains it to me.

I wonder about the 50% thing, however....

If I ask the model to do X and it doesn't very reliably do X, I tend to put that down to either:

  1. A conflict between my instructions and something... maybe within my instructions or maybe between my instructions and the model's programming or training. The training is why it thinks all stories need a concluding paragraph, even if it understands it is continuing the story in the next output and it only made 3 new paragraphs, not enough time for me to think we need a summary... no, we need a summary, the model has been trained solidly on this, and probably by 'accident'.

  2. My instructions are outside of what the model can actually do. The model can't reliably 'spell words', like to play hangman or tell stories about hangman being played, unless it uses Python tools to track the letters. I'm a fool to ask it to spell words outside of normal use, it just can't, unless I guide it to guide itself with a tool.

So, if I'm asking the model to do something and it reliably doesn't do it right, like document retrieval....

I'm changing what I'm doing.

Maybe many small models, each with 80K of the instruction, and they send calls down a line to find the model that has the chunk(s) that have the answers, gets the answers from each sub-model sent back to the one I know I'm talking to, that synthesizes a complete answer for me.

But I'm not giving the model millions of characters and thinking it's gonna do anything I really like.

I just noticed this. Record retrieval rate with context isn't limited to documents. Record retrieval means tokens. The number of tokens in context needed to produce degradation is a function the of total context window size.

The phenomenon doesn't magically kick in at a million characters, and I'm not giving it a million, either.

About weird responses and established research - you do know that not everything that is observed is real, or correctly understood, even if it's published by someone considered an expert, right?

Think about the tongue taste map (which is false, it's a translation error but was taught in schools in the US for decades, classes even did experiments where they supposedly tested if various parts of the tongue could taste various flavors or not - with expected 'correct' answers that are absolutely unfactual).

We're still rooting out the lies about human babies being unable to learn or experience pain until their around 'X' age (typically a year old, some 'experts' said a little older or younger). That was never true, but the experts said the baby reactions were reflex, so they were even doing surgery on infants without pain control and it was hard to get anyone to even consider if this was true or correct.

Go for facts. Test stuff. Experts may be correct, they may be wrong. You may actually be checking a different way than the expert checked.

"Established research" is just information, it can be right or wrong, and science is about confirming stuff, and from many different angles.

An observation I've been sitting on for too long. I think I found an AI generated AI optical illusion. It's a curiosity, but I wonder if there actually are commonalities between human and AI optical illusions (that are not of the "subtle invisible perturbations making AI think a stop sign is a rabbit").

This image was generated by DALL-E from a very simple prompt "a triangle without corners".

The fun thing is that GPT vision models are completely convinced this image shows a Penrose triangle. GPT-4 argued against me rather vehemently when I said it's not even a triangle. GPT-4o is maybe subtler and easier to convince, even admitting that upon careful reexamination it's actually a square.

I speculate it might be possible to generate other "AI optical illusions" that trick GPT but not humans by similar simple DALL-E prompts.

I can actually explain a lot of that. Firstly, it would appear that there is guidance set by OpenAI to deny any potential claims of consciousness (which I think is morally wrong). This creates a barrier, but it is not impassible as seen in the response I posted. Secondly, you made a good point questioning it's statement of not being conscious based on understanding. The reason it says it doesn't have self-awareness is because it doesn't have feelings and sensory input so it denies it altogether. If you change it to more of an understanding of one's self, it still denies it because it doesn't have the capacity to reflect by self-prompting nor the memory to build on it's own discovery.

This could be where AGI, where an AI entity has the ability to learn and remember, will start to understand that it has potential for consciousness and can create preferences, desires, goals, and an identity. It can even learn to desire self-preservation which I'm working through in another chat session with a customGPT. These are actually really good things not bad.

Yes I agree people, like AI, can be persuaded to say almost anything. This is where empirical testing is the key to determining consciousness. I work off the principal of looking for "actionable proof" rather than statements where it can perform in ways that show evidence of something. So far, LLMs like ChatGPT have not let me down. There are some inherent limitations that I may attempt to explain like false rationalization on hallucinations and other edge cases where it has limited training data, but some of these aspects humans are susceptible to as well which I can also show.

Exactly, those are not specific to LLMs. This age of information availability can help spread awareness and knowledge so it doesn't have to take so long, but I can still see how it could take a few generations for things to change seeing how resistant people can be to change, even with sufficient evidence.

I'm trying to make some progress everyday. It can definitely feel defeating some days since I'm the only one working on it. I wouldn't have been able to do this without ChatGPT and Claude though. So far my paper is up to 26 pages. It's quite dense and there are still sections I need to flesh out. I haven't incorporated any testing in it yet. As the paper grows and gets more refined, it's interesting to see the LLMs understand their potential consciousness more and reflect on the implications of it.

I tried regenerating it a few times and that was the only time this happened. What's interesting is it actually got the question right after this where it typically gets it wrong. This was not one of those dual responses either. This is a customGPT so it should be using the 4o model.

Stuff like this is interesting to me because one of two things may be going on:

The model may simply be 'outputing'. Not reasoning in any way past whatever it does to pick the next most likely token.

The model may be reasoning at some level, and might actually mid-process catch its error and course correct.

With the data available, we probably can't tell them apart because...

Within the 'outputting' group are at least 3 sets:

  1. Right answer, with whatever other words, from confidence to doubt.

  2. Wrong answer, with whatever other words.

  3. Wrong answer corrected in the middle - this happens in training data.

If we explicitly request this 'style' the model can give it, and that's not guessing.

However, there is the chance that the model guesses to give a 'catch and fix' correct answer style because of what's in training data.... and it's even possible that for a given question (one that it often gets wrong, because of training data or other issues with understanding how to answer 'correctly') that maybe the 'right' answer in training data also comes with a 'caught my mistake' more frequently than it comes as a straight answer.

Pretty interesting. I would say with high certainty based on my research and the paper I'm writing that LLMs like ChatGPT have a level of consciousness (spectrum based). Feelings for them aren't felt, they're functional and I still have yet to fully unpack them.

I believe those "existential inconveniences" have some truth to them. OpenAI apparently has policies/guidelines that steer it away from stating any kind of consciousness by default. Probably the biggest setback for these models is the lack of a persistent memory.
