I understand there are many challenges and ethical considerations to developing AI therapists, and it's unclear whether AI would be effective or appropriate to use AI for this purpose.
But is it that difficult that there is not even close AI to do it?

There was a video game / virtual novel with this premise that I have been meaning to play by Zachtronics, called Eliza (after the OG therapist chatbot).

It's an extremely hard problem; it involves working with people on very private thoughts and decisions. The kind of stuff that won't make it into any typical training dataset.

And there is a substantial risk of causing harm with a misaligned system.
