I experienced extremely bad model performance yesterday and am afraid to let codex touch my codebase, anyone else noticed this?

kind jay
void pelican
#

No sir. What was the issue you were having anymore context?

radiant pecan
#

5.4 high, full access, worked for over 2 hours and couldnt fix a bug opus fixed in a single prompt and 2 minutes. I also noticed that output tokens were generated extremely slow. Other than that I dont have speciall context.

#

Which I find weird because it usually outperforms opus on backend tasks very easily

orchid plume
kind jay
high girder
#

5.4 with context is amazing. If you're having issues with it, you might just need to scope the job better for it. Be explicit, be detailed.

torpid trout

Nah, was discussing with it what was discussed above with Robert, to have turn-skills, etc
It said I should use Agents SDK for that and other things, because relying on prompts is brittle. No s*** malloney!
Went to look at what it proposed... guess what I was looking at. Prompts that ask the model to please return to MCP, etc etc
looooool

#

And it called out the idea as a "toy example" vs his brilliant idea to use a freaking SDK ... which is based on prompts.

#

"it's safer, less brittle"
yeah... up and until the point where you actually can have a real orchestrator that is true in the SDK but otherwise... it still uses prompts to delegate tasks, use functions, and so on lol

If they do one big migration with a bunch of incorrect columns it's pretty hard to undo later

frosty zealot
#

Its pretty much fully migrated already, I had it use Firebase MCP to build the exact same schema over in the PSQL DB, it looks pretty accurate looking at the supabase overview page thing, and the data seems to be in the right spot

#

just a couple things look a little off, some jsonb in weird spots im wondering if its idiomatic or if it tried to cut corners

#

Firebase MCP then Supabase MCP & psql cli to rebuild it

boreal holly

JSONb is really handy. PostgreSQL doesn't incur a huge performance cost and it's really good for event logs

I know that but I was trying to refer to the harness of the agent itself.

boreal holly
#

havent even used the free claude homepage

high girder
#

honestly though. Even though its the same models behind claude.ai and claude code, the website tends to glaze you up a bit more than GPT sometimes, but Claude Code itself doesn't do that.

boreal holly
#

Claude is probably a good product, but I’m happy with Codex. It took so many years to realize if I wanna be productive I gotta stick with what I like, and Codex absolutely nails it. feels totally hackable, unopinionated, and liberating to use. Its gonna take a lot to get me to switch services

# worthy furnace Codex is disconnecting

have you tried my configs?

I heard EU might have connection issues, but if theres even a slight chance it is just experimental features causing a bad connection youre more than welcome to give my configs a spin

high girder
#

Fair enough. I wouldn't want you to switch either. I think you would just find use for using Claude and Codex. They're both good at different things, but I definitely understand sticking with what you like

frosty zealot
#

But I am def happier with Codex over Claude

Why codex is bad with designingcapybarathink

#

I wanted it to design vendor dashboard for laoptops and mobiles but the design always broken everything is badsad

#

Anyone knows perfect prompet for UI dashboard

calm aurora
#

I usually describe the movie or theme, and the phases

#

Kind of: i want a gui that follows tech (or insert what you want) and the flow is the following: (1) ->(2)-etc

#

Usually use Jarvis blue theme

#

Haha

pale ruin
ebon ingot

#

properly prompting issue...

#

that's what most people said to me

ebon ingot
#

Im using gpt to make prompet then send it to codex xd

pale ruin
#

then maybe your gpt was drunk on the last Sunday 🤣

ebon ingot
#

Im actually wanted to build multi-vendor website using wordpress + dokan lite, codex coded me some of dokan pro features for free xd, but when i tried to change the vendor dashboard codex couldnt do it well

#

It is good with logic but with UI nah, sad

oblique cove
ebon ingot
oblique cove
#

I think you should just learn some stuff about prompting, it's not that hard, the main thing is don't talk too much, like you don't have to say "Hey, do you think we could ..." just state what you want first thing, and use white spaces instead of one large block of text

#

less is more

calm aurora
#

I find that natural langusge works in códex

oblique cove
#

also examples help a lot, explaining the shape of what you're expecting as the outcome

#

instead of leaving it up to the model to guess what the result should be

calm aurora
#

Design it first with key KPI

ebon ingot
oblique cove
#

If you're just doing easy commands then I think chatgpt could give them to you directly, instead of needlessly passing it to codex

ebon ingot
oblique cove
#

also right now, with 5.4 available in codex and the gpt website, you can just use codex. 5.4 is conversational and can code

ebon ingot
oblique cove
#

something to note with extra high is it can lock too hard and miss the point, or make up something else it should be doing instead of what you stated. there's a line between when extra high is a good thing and when it'll just throw the model off

#

regular high works best, in most cases

#

unless you're like doing some large lsp warning fixing throughout the entire codebase, if it's a simple prompt that's not going to help

#

interestingly I've never even used low, I just had to check if that was even a setting or if I was misremembering. Idk when low is ever a good choice

#

because low will just go straight for doing what you want, without considering root causes and such

#

or if it works

calm aurora
#

I used low to work the básics

oblique cove
#

you have to know what you delegate works, because low won't care if it does

calm aurora
#

With the right skills? you use it locally or in online repo

high girder
#

Just depends on what you're doing and how you're doing it.

hollow reef
#

😵

high girder
#

I don't use fast and I rarely touch xhigh. I'm also on plus not pro, and I've never run out of usage.

hollow reef
#

What do you use

#

Out of curiousity

cedar skiff
#

i can't see a difference between 5.4 xhigh and high except for usage

high girder
#

VS Code with the Codex extension, which is basically the app, but I use the app depending on what I'm working on. The only time I really touch CLI is when I was spawning agents before they made them official.
Exactly. If you give 5.4 enough context, you really just end up wasting compute with all of these extra settings. Sure, it might be faster, but what's the rush?

calm aurora
#

What are agents?

high girder
#

extra instances of the model that work in tandem with each other to get things done faster

calm aurora
#

How do I configure them?

cedar skiff
#

sub agents are a context management solution, they go do task in a fresh context and don't pollute the main context.

calm aurora
#

I usually work with backend terminals and skills, agents is not something I tríes

#

#

calm aurora

still trellis

calm aurora

Using codex on Linux is like managing a local server with AI

#

I changed to Linux after Windows outdated my 15 years old pc, Well both haha, installed Linux, and optimization is very achievable

... how would you adjust how much token context you have when you start a chat fresh and have about 5 files in the directory (json) that it needs to read, off which only about 3 are relevant?

there is no magic "give me more context" (well, other than using a million window)
I have used that same repo in past week every day, and it never consumed 80% of the context window on first run lol

it's mixed, some people feel 5.4 is better (myself included), some others say they don't feel 5.4 is better. Benchmarks naturally show 5.4 is better though. Voratiq's one, which I usually go by as it aligns with my perception as well, shows an improvement for 5.4 (with xhigh now in the lead, last week with initially limited testing high was in the lead)

SamA said a couple years ago that if you are developing something obvious, you're probably wasting your time. Looking at how fast all of this is moving, it's clear that development and publication of new products has accelerated to AI speed. Your edge is in your own creativity, and then execution to get your product out before the other guys.

#

I had an idea last week, and then found another company just got millions of dollars in VC for a similar idea. It's still a good idea, competition actually validates the idea, I might still do it. But acting fast with a clear business plan is critical.

The "sort of" issue is that OpenAI is both a provider of tools and a provider of SaaS based on their own tools. That's good and expected but it creates a common scenario where the upstream competes with its own ecosystem. That leads too many people who believe in conspiracies to think that the company is stealing ideas ... even though SamA said "no one cares about your idea". -- https://www.financialexpress.com/life/technology-no-one-cares-about-your-idea-openai-ceo-sam-altman-tells-startup-founders-to-focus-on-execution-4153081/

Altman’s core message revolves around the point that ideas are cheap and abundant, and what separates successful startups is superior execution, speed, and momentum.

So, going back on my statement that I won't comment on this anymore: whenever someone says OpenAI stole their idea, refer back to these paraphrased quotes by Sam....

"If you are building something assuming OpenAI hasn’t thought of it or is missing an obvious feature, you're probably mistaken."
"If it seems like an obvious product for us, we probably already have it on the roadmap."
"Founders should not assume frontier labs missed something obvious."
"If there were obvious things for startups to do with this technology, we would probably just do them."
"If the idea is something that seems really obvious for OpenAI to build, we probably will."
The real opportunities are things they haven’t noticed yet, not things they forgot.
Startups win by finding unexpected use cases, not by filling trivial gaps.
OpenAI has hundreds of researchers and engineers thinking full-time about the product and the roadmap. Most obvious improvements are already considered internally. Therefore, building a startup purely on “OpenAI forgot X” is usually a bad bet.

He's really tried to discourage people from wasting their time on the obvious, which leads to complaints about stealing ideas and laments about all the good ideas being taken. He encourages (doing what humans should be doing) thinking about novel solutions to as-yet unsolved challenges. That's where the money is.
And to keep this on-topic in that Olympian gymnastics sort of way, that's how we need to use Codex.

kind jay
#

boreal holly
lean lark
#

Seriously though, peeps cry here once in a while about OpenAI stealing ideas or other peeps publishing before they can get product out. It's an old scenario, just need new devs to understand how this works.

boreal holly
#

Yeah I've joked with Codex about "I bet OpenAI's looking at what we're building here and probably gonna use it" and it always snaps back with "nope, they have a billion active users, there's no way even if they wanted to do that to zero in on any individual idea, nor would they want to"

lean lark
#

Yeah, we need to build new things with the tools. Kids and vibers are still building chatbots (or whatever) and then complaining that there are already chatbots out there or that OpenAI stole their chatbot idea.

#

I just wish they would continue to develop the primary app that most people on the planet are using. ChatGPT is still a painful MVP.

high girder
#

Just sweep up the eggshells and move on. Nobody has time for that.

gray jewel
high girder

More than likely. Giving it a job, but being explicit and giving extra details normally will mess up a model, but if you do it properly, you give the model a better framework to work inside, which gets you better results. Oh right, I need to put that paper out today

OK, a real Codex extension question: I have two VSCode windows open, to two different folders/repositories. gray jewel

kind jay
boreal holly
#

Or whatever vscodes repo-scope config conventions are

#

Oh wait, if it's two separate folders idk how it would reconcile that difference internally

high girder
lean lark
#

I'm expecting the folder from which the current project is running. Like I was thinking it would do a pwd for the cwd on startup and work from there.

high girder
#

Don't forget to be explicit though, sometimes, a small assumption like that can create that sort of drift.

boreal holly
high girder
#

Side note. I'm still waiting for my Codex Pi 5

lean lark
#

we can certainly tell it but when we open a project/workspace that uses the extension I was expecting/assuming it operated in that folder. Kinda surprised it doesn't but quite willing to specify. I just don't like the idea of having to do that for each task. Doesn't see right. Codex Cloud is absolutely focused on the specified repo.

#

I'm gonna close windows down, restart, and see what the behavior is. Will look for a config setting.

high girder
#

You wont need to do it for each task. Which OS version of VSC are you on?
