I have a very specific problem about 5.1: It does not show inline references, nor does it provide any clickable links.
Inline references till work in 5.0. The 5.1 model claims that it provides references like before, but that they are not rendered due to some change in the pipeline. The collection references at the end also does not work in 5.1.
Is anyone seeing inline references in 5.1? Providing references is my main use case for ChatGPT. It is an absurdly large downgrade. In 5.1 I now need to make a specific request for it to list references, which it indeed does, but in non-clickable form. It is a very weird choice.

After a very rewarding (and long) dialog with 5.1 about generating a spec to turn over to codex of a system I have been discussion with successive generations of GPT from the beginning. It really felt magical as it actually has a great deal of historical context to work from.

Anyway, this morning the thing is just gaslighting me asking me if I want the full "complete" spec, and the just delivering an outline. It's now figured out that the complete spec will be some 20K words which is claims exceeds its python environment's working capacity.

This unpredictability in coherence is not great, lol.

1. Pattern bias.
   The phrase “Copilot for work” shows up online very often in the context of Microsoft 365 Business Basic / Standard / Premium with Copilot add-on. When I searched, most of what I saw was those plan bundles, so I locked onto that pattern and treated “three tiers” as those Microsoft 365 tiers, not Copilot tiers.

2. Over-helpful assumption.
   I tried to be “helpful” by giving the licensing context that usually sits around Copilot pricing, instead of answering only what you actually asked. That is me prioritizing a common global use case over your literal question.

3. Not using your history properly.
   You have told me many times you want tight, on-target answers with no extra crap. I did not apply that here and slipped back into the generic behavior of overexplaining and over-including.

So the mistake was not your wording. It was my pattern matching and assumption that “people who say this usually want X,” and I treated you like “people in general” instead of just doing what you asked.

It's very rare that you can get ChatGPT to 'not respond', especially conditionally. The system prompt takes priority over user messages and user instructions. The system prompt says to respond. All the training priors also make it 'want' to respond. Most of the time if you say 'Don't respond to this' it'll say 'got it boss' or something equivalent in response. I have had luck in the past telling it to output a 'stop token' immediately and no other text, which gives a blank message 🤷

chatgpt agent mode and deep research mode is not giving good results. For me extended thinking + web search gives solid response but you have to wiat for 3-8min per prompt. It is very time consuming.

i've found that deep research and extended thinking are complementary and deep research seems to not remember past conversations but extended thinking does

what works in practice is periodically doing a deep research prompt every so often to pull in additional context that you would otherwise miss

Are you using Gemini 3? I have only used it a little bit thru AI Studio, and for a very specific task. From the vibe I get, gemini is more task focused by default, and if you do want it to be a lil chat buddy you have to prompt it for that, its not the default mode (which is the right way to do it IMO, because if you tune for buddy chat mode its much harder to prompt it to be a surgically precise tool)

My beef with ChatGPT-5 is that it feels like they've basically alienated me out of a product I was happy to pay for by over aligning it to what the bulk of users want. To me it's no longer "maleable" enough to serve its purpose so I have no other option but to move on to a different provider

I cannot erase this file, nor do I even know what this file was. It was an image generated by DALL-E, but now the session it was in was deleted. And every time the model responds, it displays "error" in gray text, as if it's trying to do a web search on this image.

The conversation is within a Project and regards a DIY laser rotary program to cut dovetail joints in a board. The conversation still seems to have some context for the Project's files, but the prior context window in the conversation seems like it's not being considered at all.

No problem. It's something I've had to do many times when I have a PDF I need ChatGPT to read, or I want to be able to select text and drop it in. I'm not sure if there's a tool out there to do that for free, but I know with Acrobat Pro (it's what I use) it will OCR the text and make a text-based PDF, though visually it won't look different to you. ChatGPT will read that with a lot less effort.

One of the reasons for this can be that you have “reached the plan limit” and then ask to create an image. Part of the extortion practices of this service is totally blocking your chat instead of just using the “mini model” for answers if images are involved, even though the mini model can access the image generator tool. So, as soon as the model outputs the image, the chat is instantly blocked, and you see this message if you try to continue the chat.
