This is so true. Around where I live, people don't even know what AI is. Most of them work on machines and they are scared that a mechanical machine will replace them, so they don't try to learn. Meanwhile, the young people that walk in there realize that everyone there is waiting to retire, see that there's a ticking clock, and are planning on the day that there is nobody else to run the machines, after which they will setup automation and go from $50k/year to $200k/year.

I don't think it would replace them. Just make the ratio of programming more powerful. With a single programmer able to act as 30 programmers. And hence more programmers in a team would increase the ratio of programming one would need for a team and decrease the cost for hiring such programmers. But multi-billion dollar companies would have 300 programmers acting as 5,000 programmers.

Since Chat GPT went mainstream, I've begun to recognize that more and more people are specializing. There's a really small percentage of people that intentionally go into the really hard stuff or throw themselves into the depths of a hard subject just to learn what interests them. AI has taken this group of people and given them a clear path ahead to stand out, no matter the subject. These last few years will mark the period of change where technology truly begins progressing in every field.

Yeah, anyone that I've shown AI to in the last couple years, especially the ones that never even knew how to use google very well, they look at AI like it's just a small thing that they think is cool, but doesn't interest them enough for them to realize that it litterally can solve most of their problems. They just have to want it. But this is the problem with most people. They complain about not knowing how to do something or that something bad is happening to them. They don't recognize that everything is in their control now. Ignorance will mark the separation between the people who are in control of their lives and the people who complain about everything.

yeah, this makes use of very little of what AI has to offer. For me, I would use it to study something that is so interesting to me and learn significantly more about it than I could otherwise. Then I would create a highly specialized essay about everything that I saw interesting. I actually did this for fun yesterday about Xai and their super computer and how it will likely mark the beginning of the universal currency of compute.

anyone feels that the new o1 released to plus users has been lobotomized? Compared to the o1-preview model we had. It spends way less time thinking and gives so much shorter responses

well my use case has been pretty specific. I use it just for game engine development, so I frequently dump entire files of code into the prompt and ask it to generate the code for a new feature I'm looking for. This requires chatgpt to understand the relationships between the various classes I've dumped in to come up with a sensible solution that fits well in the environment I've provided. My experience is that as the features become less generic, GPT 4o is less likely to be able to come up with a good fit that takes the existing codebase into consideration. While o1-mini and o1-preview has been able to excel at so far.

In fact I tested multiple times where I prompted 4o and o1-preview with the same prompt. Where 4o gave me an incomplete solution, o1-preview was better at taking all the code files I've pasted into context.

Have you tried experimenting with more structured prompts or smaller context chunks to see if that improves results? The issue could be related to the length of your files, as the context window is unfortunately still quite limited.
