i suspect it is starting to delete context when the conversation has passed the maximum user post length. if you are wasting your prompts per 3hrs you can probably clip those wasted prompts by generating a share-url for the current conversation and editing it into the end of your first prompt after it's last fully coherent answer, or better yet using it to start a new chat explaining where you think things went wrong

it will read json, but it has to load the whole json file into memory if it isn't split into pages, it prefers .rss which is less memory intensive

It isn't like a procedural program, sometimes it needs help defining what looks like obvious context, or understanding s sentence that contains mathematical symbols.
It has to figure out what system the addition is in, in software development that can have a bunch of different answers depending on if the numbers are intergers, or strings, or whtever.

And to reinforce my statements about its reasoning capabilities even more, you don't have to take my word for it, OpenAI's own CEO constantly loves talking about GPT-4's capabilities when it comes to human-like speech. On the subject of mental help, GPT-4 is being researched currently for exactly potentially being incorporated into the mental health care system.

the whole point of ML in general is emergent behavior, there's no hard logic rules just statistics

obviously your question was most statistically alike to mental health questions so it took you down that path (incorrectly)

the solution to this type of problem is insanely complex, you can't just flip a switch or monitor for it. it needs more relevant data and time to train on it. come back next year

here's the basic rundown; there's no magic happening on the server side regarding sessions/conversations. the chatgpt frontend literally just takes the chat history and fills up the context window as much as possible and sends that off to be processed. so if you're rewinding, you're just sending a different history. no surprises

i wish the frontend would let you know how far back the context goes, would help a lot with user-confusion

If you use browsing feature, and direct it to go to an online CLI repository like the site ss64 it will look up syntax instead of making it up resulting in a much more accurate scripts it generates. You dont even need to know how to program.

So I've got a question. Plugins are all well and good but some of them I'm not sure what the point of them are. For instance Zillow. Sure you can ask about houses etc but you could do the very same thing by going to the Zillow site and filtering it.

It's not practical that plugins are restricted to using only GPT-4. It would be better if they could also work with GPT-3, but that's not currently possible. Unfortunately, the speed and response limitations of GPT-4 make plugins unusable!

I'm hoping that those with relevant experience could share some tips on how to get ChatGPT to read online documents. I've tried WebPilot, Link Reader, and the official Web Browsing mode.

Both WebPilot and Web Browsing mode can read shared content on Notion, but they're completely unable to read documents in Dropbox or Google Drive. Link Reader can handle shared Notion content and documents in Dropbox and Google Drive (but it cannot read PDFs).

However, even when the reading part does work, the performance is subpar. It often only manages to read part of the document, and I'm still unsure whether this is because the documents are too long, there's some special elements involved, or it's an inherent limitation of the plugin.

Could anyone with experience share some insights? Your help is much appreciated.

I spoke to GPT-4 about it struggling to read some webpages, and asked it to design a useragent string that would give it's browser plugin a cleaner feed.
it suggested:
Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Mobile; ChatGPT; +https://openai.com/bot; text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,*/*;q=0.8)
But we agreed adding 'bot' to whatever screen readers use might work better.
Watching it browse i got the impression content heavy sites were a big bottleneck for it.
At the very least adding 'Mobile;' to the comment should stop it navigating full-fat desktop sites from webservers that would be happy to offer a mobile or amp or static site instead.
Or give it the option to browse bing's static cached version of pages it fails to read :)
Dunno if that is any help to the devs but didn't know where else to say it.

I've been thinking about good use cases for this tech (just generally speaking) and I've struggled to think of something that makes sense given its limitations and how each prompt can produce many different outputs.

I had a thought today for a really neat use case for a driving simulation game, such as those semi trucks sims, where tickets that are given to the player could be determined through actual laws for the given state or states being drivin in/on/through the simulation, and then the citation could be "fought against in court" using the GPT api using as much relevant info and laws as possible. It'd be like an RPG of sorts but done through ChatGPT, where it would act as both the dungeon master, judge, lawyers, etc... you could have the API argue with itself, theoretically.

Oh yeah, sorry i said the wrong thing, but it really isn't just you. Mine has been working fine but yesterday it was acting up and wasn't working very well at all. Definitely generated text more similar to gpt-3.5. I fixed it my logging out and logging back in 3 or 4 times. For some reason, that fixed it and I haven't had problems since.

Yeah i agree with what people have been saying. In my case, generally speaking, I have noticed that its been less creative and logical recently. I generally use gpt 4 to write creative texts and analyze writing. Recently, the outputs have been shorter, and often just restate the input instead of generating new creative text or properly analyzing the input.

I've been experimenting a lot now with API access where you can choose current gpt-4 model and gpt4-0314 and none of them are good also, so it is not only ChatGPT problem, i had to spend over 2 dollars in tokens and not even got what I expected, more than month ago it would have been just 1 or 2 prompts.

ChatGPT Plus (4.0) has too few tokens for my usecase. I have science engineers asking it questions on specific topics related to physics, chemistry etc... As of about 2 weeks ago, they are complaining ChatGPT Plus 4 is forgetting parts of the conversations they are having, and they have to re-tell it the same information and ask the questions again... I understand this is a token limit issue, and I understand the API verison has up to 32K tokens, vs 8K or whatever the limit is on the Plus version. The only problem is, it is not a similar product, in that it's meant for developers and I don't see an option to just ask GPT-4 questions and pay for the 32K token version. Is there an easy way to access this? I'm willing to pay slightly more for a larger GPT-4 token model. Thanks.

I guess.. until somebody else beats them with a better product, which at the rate things are improving, it may not take that long. I just read a couple of weeks ago that somebody figured out a way to make a stable 100K token GPT3.5-like product that can even run on high end home GPUs.. not sure I'm remembering that 100% correct, but it seems to align to the leaked google doc that nobody has a Moat around their AI chat programs right now

yeah it's pretty bad. Even GPT 3.5 is far superior.. but I might try it again in a couple of weeks to see if it has improved. Google has near infinite money, and lots of smart people, so it's pretty much guaranteed it will improve at some point.

For now. This is the fastest evolving space I've ever seen in tech, and I've been around it for 30 years. Just last week there was a multi-model open source AI put out. 2 weeks before that a paper on how to make 100K token AI models at the same or reduced footprint. OpenAI is supposedly packed with top notch team members, but it's not by reducing capability, and making their AI woke in the name of safety that's going to keep them at the #1 spot. Launching plugins, was a good forward step, they need to keep pushing the needle forward to stay at #1. It is far too early to be calling winners here. Many are already saying open source will win out. Maybe.. we'll see.

It's been discussed on twitter at length. You ask it certain questions, and it's all very left leaning. I'm not suggesting that OpenAI is another woke company. It's possible their training data was sourced from more left leaning sources. Also keep in mind that the Right tends to value liberty and free speech over the left's censorship, deplatforming, cancel culture etc. Interestingly, AI Safety tends to have more similar alignment values to left leaning sources of info.

No, you're wrong about that. Even Google's leaked doc a month ago confirmed as much. They basically concluded they have no moat, as in nothing is stopping others from superceeding their AI capabilities. Just a month ago there were articles published on how the hundreds of millions that Meta used in resources to create Lamma are no longer required and just a very high end home GPU could accomplish similar things. Like I said, this is all very quickly evolving. If companies like OpenAI and google's Bard get too restrictive, there will definitely be alternatives. Even Elon already threatened to launch a "basedAI" .. which I think is now renamed "TruthAI" or whatever (it hasn't launched yet).

Asking people to define woke isn't an original thought. I've seen it regurgitated ad naseum online as to imply that the person doesn't know what they are talking about. In short, ChatGPT tends to provide left-leaning responses when it comes to history, politics and humor. That's been my experience. Oh and it also tends to strongly advise about any topic that is slightly different than the mainstream narratives, especially on the science front. I've spoken with Phd level physicists working on new ideas that GPT won't even engage them on because it considers them too controversial or considered incorrect according to standard physics. Again, I am not sure I can blame OpenAI for that, I'm guessing it's a combination of their training data sources + Safety parameters.. although one of their guidelines a few months ago did claim that GPT had guard rails specifically to not entertain controversial topics.. in any subject. All of the guidelines seemed fairly reasonable in my mind (like don't entertain violence, fraud etc), but discussing controversial topics is entirely required for science and various fields to advance.

Like I said, it won't last. Many people desire truth over pre-established biased narratives. If OpenAI doesn't provide it, somebody else will. Already 2 months ago or so, somebody leaked the Meta Llamma model that had zero guard rails on it. Thus already we have on the Internet an AI that was like 65GB-250GB trained with millions of $$ of resources, with zero guard rails. Like you could ask it to give instructions on how to build a bomb and it wouldn't hesitate. You can regulate AI all you want, but there will be underground models or leaked models with no guardrails in the same way that piracy is illegal but it goes on every day still.

I don't see that happening at all. For starters hardware works at the very low layers of computation. Hardware is about fast calculations & transmissions, not about context. Even the OS of a computer has no context awareness. It's not until we get to the application layers that context is even relevant.

Regulators have no clue about computers though. That's a dumb idea. Like I said, you can already run GPT-3 or close to 3.5 level AIs with no guardrails.. on your home PC, granted you need a top of the line GPU in most cases, but optimizations are already being announced. Various AI experts are predicting we'll eventually be able to run AIs on our own cell phones. Hardware regulation makes little sense. Also you can rent vast sums of hardware remotely over the Internet from some other country. Like I said, you can regulate whatever you want, that will stop average joe from using it, it won't stop somebody with enough know how, intent and perhaps money. No regulation has ever stopped a criminal before they committed their crime. Regulations are there to make you think twice if you want to risk it and get punished... some people look at that and decide to take the risk anyway.

Look they can regulate who can buy A100 chips.. but GPUs are still around. China will eventually make their own AI chips, as will any country that can't get them. Open source AI chips will eventually be made. Probably Rus sia or somebody will make them just to upset the US. There's 190+ countries out there, and several dozen of them don't care what the US or Europe think.

TL;DR: AI will not be controlled by a few large companies, nor by regulators. The same is true for: il legal d rugs, pir acy, po rno g raphy, noo tr opics and or even legal phar maceudicals. It also makes no sense to restrict high end hardware. It slows down development of non-AI related stuff. Imagine stopping the evolution of GPUs at the RTX 4900 because AI regulators thought it was a bad idea for us to get more powerful GPUs. Every single time there's a major new technology, people are afraid it will be used for bad things and want it banned.

The car? Bank ro bbers will get away too fast! The cellphone? Dr ug dea lers will be able to warn each other of po lice coming and coordinate dr ug trades! The Internet? Ter ro rists will be able to communicate with each other and trade horrible ideas! Encryption? Regular citizens should have nothing to hide, also only US gov should have access to encryption so lets ban its export!
