Pencils can be used for building and combat (not much damage though)
But for building, what they could be used for is to mark where you want to place your blocks when making a house if you decide to go for a different layout
The crafting recipe could be 1 or 2 lead ore and some wood (any kind)

Placing blocks might take longer also for the fact that you also have to mine them. With a pencil you can leave markings and place blocks right over the pencil marks

id say as like a highlighter tool that would helpful with building kinda like how The Forest has its highlights for whats being built and other players can view
