Rather long post. TL;DR at bottom.

I've been going through a back and forth with the "How-To" tutorial video on the official website, trying to make it work through CurseForge, through original/manual means of the folders with downloads in base Minecraft, etc. And since I've been pulling my hair out on trying to figure it out for almost two days- along with Google not yielding any answers for my issue- I came here hoping someone could help me. grief
My problem lies with the mod just not working a lot of the time, either by standalone or with other mods in CurseForge. I have a modpack that FTF is in that I've gone through so many times to find out the issue but nothing seems to help. [Meaning that every time I go through it, I usually have the FTF mod active alone in the list and nothing else first to try to debunk the means of why it isn't working correctly.]

TL;DR:

  • In CurseForge I have had it work sometimes but never fully since it gave the mods "Error" message that's part of the pack upon loading a new world and then sometimes not. None of the items that are part of the mod show despite the '/datapack list' command saying it is running, which is reoccuring.
  • Doing the step by step with the video on the official site "works" but none of the items show as said above, no world events occur, and Herobrine never appears. Both with CurseForge and base Minecraft mod folders.
  • Opening base Minecraft with the mod and not with CurseForge is just an incredibly laggy world- as to why I'm still not sure.
  • I have never gotten an error/crash message from this mod or any other mod within the modpack so I can't give any details on that.
  • New and old worlds with the mod give no difference of the mods performance.

This might be a very simple solution to everyone else familiar with the mod but I just can't figure it out myself by any other means.
Am I doing something wrong or perhaps missing a very obvious step?

So, regarding the "work sometimes" part, the message might just not appear sometimes and that's just how it is, also what items are you referring to here?

The items I look for to see if it works are the head to summon the fight with him and the blackstone that it goes into. Trying to craft it doesn't work either

The way to check for sure if mod works is to run the config

Then tweak it to a point where he will be constantly near

So, you put the Data/Resourcepack file into the resourcepacks folder in the version and then also put the same file into the world's Datapacks folder

I’m really sorry this has gone unanswered for so long. I’ll try to give as much info as I can to assist.
For single player, the mod itself will work just fine, just make sure you have mod resources above your other resourcepacks
There is a delay that keeps Herobrine from spawning the first time the world is loaded, it lasts 3 days
If you get the config command working, the mod/datapack, whichever you use, should be active.
From the Fog is a very subtle pack… I may have misunderstood, but there aren’t really any items or fights involving Herobrine, he instead will keep his distance and watch from the render distance fog.

So does using the shrine work at all like Drake suggested or no because that didn’t work.
Another thing is setting the haunt/3 days thing to zero and how common he showed up to "common" didn't give any difference as well.
As for the items and stuff I crossed out I came to realize that the mods I was looking at in an unsourced video were different mods so no worries about that one.

Gotcha, sorry for late response again. If you'd like to know if he's appearing at all, you can run /function fromthefog:admin/debug_mode. If it spams your chat green, there's activity. You can run the same command to turn debug mode off. If I recall correctly, the shrine strike works only once, before the haunt delay has hit 0, which cancels the delay. I could be wrong though.
In any case, best way to check if it's working is to run that command and wait
