Is it stupid? Yes. Am I gonna flesh it out anyway? Absolutely.
Proximity chat could work as a pre game toggle, represented by a microphone icon on the lobby menu that would take audio from someone’s mic and gave it play depending on how far they are from the player, in an actual match, the pause menu could be extended as in the image below, and display people’s microphone volumes next to a slider that could be used to turn them down or mute them if they’re just screaming into their mic. All in all, I think this would be a very good way to make the game funnier and more entertaining, all while giving players an easy way to communicate mid game.
On the options menu, players would have an option not to enable voice chat altogether, which could be represented by a crossed out mic to the right if their name in-game.
If possible, record of what’s been said could be kept to allow for reporting for things such as hate speech.
