We can help you here.
Hello! Thank you very much. I started using FL Studio about a month ago, and I’m trying to learn how to produce Lo-fi. The problem is that I’ve been finding so many different tutorials, and each one seems to teach things in a different way. It’s been a little confusing, and I’m not really sure what I should focus on first.
I’d really like to have some kind of direction so I can understand where to start, what’s actually important to learn, and which fundamentals I should focus on to make Lo-fi that genuinely sounds good, instead of just following tutorials without really understanding what I’m doing
That problem is actually a clue. Everyone does things a little differently, and you should treat those tutorials as just another option rather than expecting to find the "right way" to make music.
You should start with what you need and what skills you feel are lacking the most. Drums are extremely important in Lo-Fi so that's a decent place to start if you're having trouble identifying your own weak points. Work on sample selection and/or sound design, making good patterns that don't get old quickly, and then arranging those patterns in clever ways to keep things interesting.
Study songs you think are great to find out what your favorite types of drum patterns are, and write down what they're doing at each part of the song, how long each part lasts, etc. Anything you think you might want to know when you try to make your own songs later. Bring them into FL so you can see how they look on the grid. Once you get your own track close to finished use wave candy and other tools to see what's going on that you may have missed and how everything is balanced.
Once you know how to use the tools and you know what your genre needs you can draw a line between those things and follow it.
Thank you so much, bro! Thinking about it this way, I realize I would never have found an exact formula for making this. I really appreciate the advice and the time you took to help me!
You're welcome! I think that's a good thing. Music is more interesting when we are all finding different ways to do things and sharing them.
I'm in here all the time and so are a lot of other FL experts. Don't be shy about asking for help if you get stuck. Glhf!
