I'm making a rough, rough draft for the main theme for my RPG Maker horror game, Bloody Blue. Important thing to note is that I know next to nothing about music theory or how to use FL Studio, and my main technique so far has been thinking "What would Toby Fox do?" and then trying to do that. I've never made music before and truth be told I have no idea what I'm doing. <3

It feels like it needs more, in terms of length, notes, and instrumentals, but I don't know what that "more" is.

Gentle feedback appreciated as I'm just starting out, but say anything and everything you can think of, please!

This isn't bad at all for a first thing

#

Should probably add a bass at some point

#

And I think it'd be cool if after a bit an eerie melody came in on a screetching high violin or a glockenspiel, or a synth for that matter

#

Also add reverb

#

A lot

#

I see a lot of potential with this

tired lance
#

ooohhh

#

its meant to sound like. sad. if that makes sense.

#

sad and crepy

dawn mesa
#

Yeah and it's doing a pretty good job already

#

You just need to continue it

#

I'd go for around 2 minutes total length for a main menu theme

tired lance
#

yeah i agree, 1:30-2 mins

#

i also wanna add soime differences in the violin

#

maybe a little violin solo at some point?

dawn mesa
tired lance
#

Bt like idk how

dawn mesa
#

Also think those are violas

tired lance
#

hang on

dawn mesa
#

But anyway

tired lance
#

Im unsure actually

#

I just

#

I used an undertale soundfont for the violin

#

So it was called a violin there!

dawn mesa
#

I was thinking that when they come in one of the voices should move like quicker

tired lance
#

Triewd to lower ther violins when the music box DESCENDS

#

Oops caps

#

What are some ideas you have for lengthening the song to around 1 1/2-2 minutres

dawn mesa
#

Keep what you have and then keep it going then make a melody in the really high register

#

Then you could change it up with a different/similar idea

#

I'm lowk like getting mad ideas for this

tired lance
# tired lance

Do you like the violin shifty bits here or is it too much?

dawn mesa
#

No its subtle but good

#

I was thinking at the end of every bar add like a descending line from the strings

tired lance
#

Ok good good! Myu friend suggested i put it a bit lower than that but it felt too sudden and harsh

#

Umm...Sorry, im afraid I don't quite follow?

#

Like i make it go bum bum bum bum like the music box does?

#

Like

dawn mesa
#

Eh you don't gotta listen to me

#

Make it your own

tired lance
#

my friend suggested i add some clarinets?

#

dop you think that would sound good?

#

i was thinking some piano personally

#

maybe playting alongside the music box

#

but

dawn mesa
#

Clarinets could work if you use them carefully

tired lance
#

And whjich part is a bar? is it like when it goes 1 2 3 4?

dawn mesa
#

Yes

#

4 beats is a bar

#

Also calls a measure

#

Not always 4

tired lance
#

So these are bars?

dawn mesa
#

But for the sake of teaching you let's say it's 4

tired lance
#

The parts i highlighted?

dawn mesa
#

Yes

tired lance
#

Ohh okay

#

So would you want me to cut off the long violin notes or just add more alongside them?

dawn mesa
#

Add more

#

If you're talking about a new section

#

Do you know what a key/scale is?

#

If so do you know what key you are in

#

It sounds like e minor to me but I'm not perfect pitch

tired lance
#

violin and music box sections respewctively

#

and question

#

yknow how the violin has like, the two distinct sections

#

should i lower the first section as well when i lower trhe second one for the descending music box segments?

dawn mesa
tired lance
#

uh..what does diatonic mean sorry

dawn mesa
#

In-key

tired lance
#

ohh ok

dawn mesa
#

Using notes in the key

tired lance
#

sdhould i make there be a little transition back to the higher prortion i wonder

dawn mesa
#

Only notes I the key

tired lance
#

like a small violin note thats hal;fway

dawn mesa
tired lance
#

hmmm.,..

#

iot osunds like a good idea but it doesnt quitre sound right at the same time?

#

like i like the idea but it idsnt quitre doing what i want it to do?

#

actu8ally no when i combine it all together it does sound good

#

oH YEAH IM COOPKING

tired lance
tired lance
#

DANG IT i tried to expand it to be like twixe the length and i just ended up messing it all up T-T

tired lance
#

nvm it autosaved thank goodness.

tired lance
dawn mesa
#

Its good

#

Think you should add the melody at around 16-17 seconds wherever that part starts

inland tendon
#

I'd add some low end percussion like a sine wave synth

dawn mesa
#

Depends on the feel you want

inland tendon
#

For a main theme I think it could be good

dawn mesa
#

Experiment

tired lance
#

OOH TY

#

For starters though... I jyust want to extend this to be longer

#

but hwen i tried to do it it just maede everything go out of synx

#

SYNC

#

What sghould i do?

inland tendon
#

You can do it with the sequencer in the chanel rack

#

Just add the synth that is called 3xOsc, put the sine wave and adjust the envelope

#

like a percussion

#

What's the tempo of the project?

tired lance
#

um, 120 bpm? is that what the tempo is?

inland tendon
#

yes

#

Just add the synth with the envelope I told you every bar

#

It doesn't let me upload the file I made sorry
