#When I import an 808 its stereo width doesn't sound as good
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
are there any effects going on in Maschine?
what does the raw sample sound like?
Yes, an Ozone imager. When I take it off during export, and put it on identically after importing it into FL, the result sounds like these clips.
so, you have ozone imager in maschine
and then, if you try to load imager in fl it doesn't sound the same?
Exactly. And if I export it with the Ozone imager - during which it just theoretically sound as it does in Maschine - it sounds like this.
As you can hear, this problem only arises inside FL Studio.
Sounds just fine as an exported audio clip
screenshot your FL
Anything in particular you want screenshotted?
mixer insert that your 808 is on
do you hear the effect inside of FL?
For some reason it's like FL literally doesn't allow a stereo width like that. I tried to recreate it with an 808 directly into FL, instead of from Maschine, and it still sounds flat like that.
I hear the Ozone Imager doing something, but not recreating how it sounds in Maschine.
can you try a blank project as a control test?
Sure, 1 sec
this is what it sounds like if i do it personally
i have to crank the settings but yeah, it sounds the same as your example
so, i just want to make sure you're like, setting this up correctly
Alright, I got an interesting development
This is what it sounds like in the afformentioned project, not blank
but
In the blank project it sounds just fine
Just as it should
what are you imager settings in the original project
meant in FL
what's on your master insert?
Nothing, empty
Wait, shit, nevermind
I made a mistake - I had a soundgoodizer on the master. It compressed the hell out of it without me realising
what setting did you have on soundgoodizer?
Preset A, about 20-30% tuned
yeah so, next time that happens, work down the chain from channel to each insert to see where the problem happens
trying a blank project is a good way to see if it's the project or something else
which is what i had you do
so, process of elimination, and a control test
Yep, totally my mistake. Well, now I've learnt that Soundgoodizer can easily compress stereo width way too much
Putting it on my drums bus instead to work around the issue
Instead of the master
to clarify, the A preset in soundgoodizer has the low end's stereo width all the way set to merged
Ah shit that makes so much sense
so, anything below 200hz was being monoized
I can just turn that off in maximus
I really gotta learn how to use a multiband compressor
Ik it's slightly off topic, but any good advice or video for learning?
do you know how a compressor works?
Know how to use a compressor well enough but multiband seems daunting
yeah
Know all the knobs and how to use them decently well
then you already know how a multiband compressor works
multiband compressing splits your signal into different bands, allowing you to compress them individually
clicking the solo button in any of the bands in maximus lets you hear that bands frequencies
so, if there's a frequency region that's too loud, but the rest is fine, that's when mb comp comes into play
de-essing for example, is multiband compressing
Ah alright, that makes a lot of sense then. I do still gotta improve at using a compressor more intentionally; I know how to compress just to remove the transients and/or heighten the sustain, but all the other, more fancy uses like pumping (or actually having the ear to intentionally fine-tune my attack and release) is beyond me for now
it's okay, it takes a long time to hear that stuff, i barely am able to hear envelope changes like that, unless it's completely obvious
Especially that last part, attack and release - I know what it does, I can ear large gaps, but just don't have the ear to fine tune it
Yeah that takes training I'll guess
a lot
Compressors are meant to be felt and not heard - generally - so that's a challenge
but yeah, training training training
thanks for the help again
