Been trying to nail this style for years. I can say I pulled a few more inspirations directly from 'cutting edge of notion' from Star Ocean 3 than I might've liked but it's pretty much an original work aside from that. The bassline towards the end is pretty much BASED on the bassline (hah) from the bridge in that song. I spent a lot of time trying to get the mix to sound live and full. But I might have made certain frequencies too loud for example on the organs which are either screechy or not too shabby or both........? I plan on doing a bit of an overhaul already. And I'm gonna separate the drums into their own tracks and try to process them individually. Aside from the mix, how does it flow compositionally? does anything feel strange, or inconsistent? Does it make sense how we get to certain places or is there a sense of contrived-ness?
#How's my Motoi style battle theme??! (im totally gonna be glossed over here :'< )

The bassline is indeed sick
the instrumentation is very reminiscent of some SNES JRPG classics
I think the composition makes sense
the drum beat is varied enough that it doesn't feel repetitive
no worries
I checked out your youtube channel which also has some really good VGM style tracks
When making a song like that you're really worried about rhythm and how it all works with each other
Cause it can get busy and random really fast
I'm glad you like them!!
I think a good example of chaotic rhythm that makes sense is battle at the big bridge from Final Fantasy V
it moves from 5/4 to 3/4 to 4/4 back to 5/4 with crazy organ shredding not unlike your track
Hahaha nobuo is one of my biggest inspirations
Mainly FFX and FFVI
I haven't done time signature shifting like that in a while but I think I should go ham with it again next time I see the oppurtunity...
whoops battle at the big bridge actually goes from 6/8 to 7/4 to 4/4 if my counting is correct
just gave it another listen
Nice usually I need a Google search for that lol 😐
My ears are getting better but yea I still need the assistance
Love 7/4 and 7/8 also.
I should mess with them again too
Anyhoo all in all, thank you for the feedback. I was hoping for some roasts but I'll take the compliments for now. It is laaaaate over here...night!
no problem
This absolutely sends. Arguably the most exhilarating thing I've heard on here recently.
If you wanna talk mixing, it's a little hard to hear the organ, so you might want to bring it forward a bit
That is a massive compliment sir. thank you.
I've been trying to mix it in better since i read this but it turns out mixing in organs is really tricky 🙂 at least for me
the harmonics are like, touchy
Yeah and you have to allocate enough space in the mids for it to really pop through
That's the only way then i see.
I think in my case i really tried to force it all in a bit. The organ is blasting through 2k-2.5khz
Star Ocean 3 OST - Cutting Edge of Notion
@unreal mist the song takes after this in a lot of ways. (like i said more than I might've liked). Is there like, anything you can discern about what makes this mix work?
I think i hear a lot of tube warmth/saturation on the organ. And the leslie helps it poke through more
sorry if im assuming on your assistance also i think it just helps me analyze too 😂 ....
I am a beginner myself so I won't be able to leave technical feedback but this indeed sounds like a "spin off" of Cutting Edge Of Notion. As a fan of Star Ocean series myself and Motoi tracks, this is really great and I'm sure Motoi himself would approve, keep up the great work man!
I uh, don't think this mix is all that great either 😅
The Star Ocean one to be clear
but then again that could also just be me and the way I like to mix (give some love to the high-ends)
what vsts were involved?
Thank you that is a massive compliment!! 😅
I can do without highs as long as the mix is coherent and clear and knows what its about
Good mixing is about the perfection of an aesthetic more than just the perfection of an ideal...
though i can say the original in game mix is definitely lost through whatever methods were used to reupload the song to youtube
the difference is probably pretty big 😐
