It's how they get ya. On average you will hit your 6-star between pulls 65-70ish if you don't luck into getting the 0.8% chance before soft-pity starts to kick in. So on average if you lose the 50/50 the first time, your going to end up going to hard pity at 120, and be be 10-20 pulls shy of what would have been another 6-star 50/50 if the hard pity at 120 didn't reset it.
