It would have been interesting to see OWL have a structure where teams must always have a female player in-game at any time. While people will argue you're not picking the 'best' players and favouring gender, all teams would be at an equal level so no team would be advantaged, and it would encourage T1 teams to develop talent at T2 and T3 level because they need those players coming through.

The logistical challenges and costs of having mixed gender teams - in any sport - immediately increase. As it is, teams already have a financial incentive to not include female players and team members - let alone the harassment and other surrounding issues that inevitably become a factor.

In the very example of the W Series, the better way to do it would have said that in order to enter a team in the Formula 2 or Formula 3 championship, one driver from each team should have had to be a woman - so that they're required to compete at the level of the men who currently compete. Segregating them in to a separate category doesn't require them to improve to a level where they can compete amongst the same development level.

And that's the problem. Where you have a sport where there is also a mens-only league, people will generally prefer to watch only the mens league and the womens league will typically get ignored. The exception tends to be where the sport is one that has a higher female participation rate.
