You either join or participate in a team that competes in Contenders Open Trials first by going through Open Division, to aim to compete in Contenders regular season.

At least for Overwatch, there is no guarantee that you get picked up immediately. You spend time in multiple teams so you get noticed by Franchise teams who might be interested or by applying during the offseason (depends on the team)
