He tried to 'harness the power of a blackhole' and it somehow split his personality or something, blah blah and now he can control gravity.
But due to his split personality and being essentially insane, he finds it hard to control it, until Talon steal him from a prison for crazy people and use him for their own benefit.
It's theorised that the 'music' he hears is actually Talon mind controlling him but he's been hearing that music presumably before they captured him, so the whole 'music' aspect of his insanity is still unexplained.

my thought behind is it, there's no way for him to be physically killed because of the fade. But in order to master it you have to be comfortable with taking a fatal blow for the fade to take it's effect. Before the explosion he was always cautious because obviously in while operating as a human being it doesn't make sense to take the risk needed to activate fade. But after experiencing the explosion, the power manifested in his new body or the explosion helped him harness the ability since he didn't need to psychologically rely on the mortality of his human body

Is there any lore at all behind the respawning system? many heroes acknowledge that they died and came back

They don't represent real situations but they do represent the hero's character
So if reaper were to die and then suddenly not die he would say "this is my curse" because he's an edgelord
Mercy would comment on medicine being powerful, etc etc

I feel like Overwatch 2 will majorly conflict with the lore of Overwatch, Depending on how I think they're going to deal with the lore, if it takes place after Recall then the lore won't too crazy changed, but that's assuming it will take place just after Recall
