Hey I saw some people debating on tiktok before if widowmaker was brainwashed specifically to feel alive while killing or if that was something she already had
The person pulled a quote saying something about how when she killed gérard she felt alive and used that as evidence
I was always under the impression that the reason she felt that was because of talons brainwashing, not because of something she has always secretly felt
They also said she willingly went back to talon after killing gérard because she wanted to, whereas I thought she went back because there wasn't really anywhere else to go and the guilt of killing her husband was too much so she agreed to have those experiments done on her to take those emotions away?

but we dont know if killing Gerard awakened something in her that was there all along, or if Talon's conditioning made her enjoy the killing

I'm not saying this to disagree with you, because ultimately I do agree with you. I'm just explaining why I think they are developing the story and character arcs the way that they are:

I think they are focusing on the exceptional characters in the universe first and foremost. Basically, in order to be a Hero, you need to have something exceptional about said character

that's why they don't just add Hashimoto goons or null sector bots willynilly

secondly, they are still in the process of building out the "base" of their story... yes 9 years later they're still on like the first step lol (ughhhh)

they are making factions and thusly characters that are loosely connected or will be connected once a little more story is added on top of them

they are planning this narrative for longevity and they need a huge variety of characters and a very fleshed-out and colored-in world to place it on

I want to contrast what they're doing with another world-franchise I know a lot about: for instance Pokemon started with 151 pokemon and like 9 towns or whatever. Then they wanted to EXPAND more and at first they were like "oh yeah this is the Johto region with all new pokemon that haven't been discovered yet... except they have they've been around since the time of legends" and then you think back to the original plot and it's just weird that they didn't have any knowledge of anything other than the 151...

Gerard was the leader of Blackwatch, he was the one who led the operations against Talon, it wasnt so simple, they cant go in and kill him

Amelie was Gerard weak point and Talon knew it. When she was kidnapped he did everything he could to rescue her, And thanks to mental conditioning she was the perfect sleeping agent

Just so you know, YouTube has plenty of better summaries, but basically, Overwatch is an international organization that's created something like 30-40 years from now to save humanity from the existential threat of an AI that had gone rogue and transformed all 'omnics' on earth into killing machines. Since humanity had resorted to using a lot of these robots to better their lives, they were everywhere, in every home, and the casualties were terrible.

This conflict was called the Omnic Crisis, and it lasted two years. The Omnic Crisis ended when the rogue AI, named Anubis, was contained by Overwatch. And when the conscience of a sentient omnic, named Aurora, was broadcasted throughout the world and gave sentience to all omnics, effectively stealing them from Anubis' influence.

Then 20 years go by, where Overwatch's missions moves from a duty of saving the world to a peacekeeping duty, helping populations internationally to recover from the crisis. Akin to many UN missions rn. It during this time that the concept of' heroes' develop. During that time period, omnics, having gained sentience, gradually start asking for rights, but humanity's trauma from the Omnic Crisis makes this very difficult.

Eventually OW would develop a sister black ops faction called Blackwatch, led by Gabriel Reyes (Reaper) whose duty was to do the dirty work of getting rid of criminal activity and gangs throughout the world, but often through means that would violate countries' sovereignty. Eventually, for that reason and many other, plenty of countries started disputing OW's actions and wondering if they were still needed, since the Omnic Crisis was far behind them.

Something like a decade before the events of the game, OW goes through a series of terror attacks which destroys several of their HQs. This is the nail in the coffin. The UN court of justice bans them from existence after a lengthy trial, and we're at the current events.

Alright so at the current events, there's what's called a 'Second Omnic Crisis'. There used to be mega factories that produced omnics pre-First Omnic Crisis and these were automated by Anubis during the first crisis. They were shut down by Overwatch, but for some reason, the Siberia factory (called an Omnium) restarted by itself all of a sudden. Plenty of hostile robots are threatening the world again.

In parallel there is this group of sentient omnics, named Null Sector, led by Rammattra, who chose violence against a humanity that refused to accept them. They started doing terror attacks and taking control of omnics to (supposedly) add them to their cause.

Null Sector is being aided by Talon, an international criminal organization with fuzzy goals, which was a life-long enemy of Overwatch.

To help humanity fight off the new omnic crisis and Null Sector, Overwatch was reformed, albeit illegally. And we're at that point now.
