Deadlock Rebels is the best of the three - not just because it's Ashe and Cassidy (it was published before the rename, so he's still called McCree in the book)
it's genuinely well written
Sojourn gives good insight to Sojourn herself and what the omnic crisis was like
Hero of Numbani was the weakest of the three, mostly because it used a lot of game lines as dialogue, especially for Lucio, although the writing for Doomfist is fantastic
if you have the opportunity, I suggest getting the audio books - they are read by the VAs
Orisa reads Hero of Numbani, Ashe reads Deadlock Rebels, and Sojourn reads Sojourn, of course

They’ll still be playable for the simple fact that you’d be losing many players if you literally get rid of them for narrative purposes. For example, if you kill rein and he’s no longer playable you risk having an entire play base not playing the game as much anymore cause their favorite hero is missing. That or you risk introducing a new character who’ll be continuously compared to his predecessor and it’s just a headache for no reason

since OW2 its been a biggger and bigger stretch with each character in which they must make up elaborate stories that are completely irrelevant to the major narratives of OW, or, worse, just basically dump them in with nothing to tie into the existing lore at all (cough cough venture)
