as for sentience it's rly hard to say because definitions can get a bit hazy

but imo for sentience u need subjective experience which basically means being able to feel good or bad or feel types of pain/pleasure based on the individual

echo doesnt rly fit this definition atm because her experiences for the most part are absorbed from other ppl

same goes for orisa who is in many ways an extension of efi

however then theres the whole other q of whether they could acc "learn" sentience which is a whole other rabbit hole

Yeah and defining sentience is a massive problem in itself because it’s ultimately a philosophical issue and not one that can be measured by science. Sentience is an innately human term - which is why it’s so difficult to try to apply it to a man-made robot or machine. I think the premise of the overarching struggle with sentience being defined/recognized in the omnic portion of Overwatch lore is such a great point to explore but unfortunately the way overwatch is going is making that more difficult to get answers on LOL

Also thinking of it from Liao's perspective, Echo would have largely been in the Development stage of her lifecycle, and I'm sure that Liao probably wasn't finished testing with Echo's prototype to even be able to come to a definitive conclusion or to have a direct means of testing criteria to label Echo as sentient or a "true omnic" - so it very well could have been something that Echo fully developed down the line, but it's hard to say from my end because I don't know too much of Echo's lore aside from the bits and pieces ive picked up lol

For instance I'm sure there are a ton that would rank Illari lowest but we really only have the first chapter, if that, of her story. She has so much potential.
Vs let's take Torb who had a hand in shaping titans and other weapons, a father to Brig who is another hero (also at the beginning of her story), but he's sorta retired and basically just a "consultant" now

I actually saw a very well made fan comic that took place after D.Va was placed on medical leave (cinematic). She basically found rammatra in pieces and worked on him as a side project to get him back in order, and his voice module was broken so he couldn’t talk. It was super wholesome and might give you a look into a potential friendship of them, if I can ever find that comic again to send to you lol
