on the one hand, a few years ago I would have expected the roster of heroes to also include a bunch of "free agents" who aren't part of OW or Talon and I would say that Kiriko would be one of those

#

however I did include D.Va and Pharah within those "free agent" theory and now they're part of Overwatch so 🤷

I think down the line they'll at least team up with OW and possibly join up. We'll see how Heroes Ascendant stories go I suppose.

The lore is this in a nutshell

#

The world was peaceful around 30 years ago until omnics starting attacking humanity after a god program, Anubis, took control of them

This began the global war that would become known as the Omnic Crisis, a war between humanity and machines

Things seemed hopeless until Overwatch was formed, consisting of Gabriel Reyes, Jack Morrison, Ana Amari, Reinhardt, Torbjörn, and Mina Liao

They fought against the omnics for years until the first sentient omnic, Aurora, gave her life to free omnics from Anubis and give them sentience

This soon led to the end of the Omnic Crisis

People however thought they were getting out of control in their actions and started turning against the organization. Even problems from within their ranks too

This led to a fight between Jack and Reyes that destroyed the HQ and the UN shut Overwatch down

Bastion didn’t really participate in the Omnic Crisis. It’s drop pod was damaged upon landing and it sat dormant for years until accidentally being reactivated by a bird

It wandered the forest since than for years until crossing the ocean and entering a populated area. It’s appearance scared people into taking up arms, but Torbjörn stopped them to deal with the bot himself
