In Sojourn novel - and beware spoilers : || Sojourn niece drowned (she was 5). And they gave her surgery to remove some of her legs replace it with cybernetics. Because her heart stoped, she probably had brain damage and couldn't walk again || I suspect that is what they did with Genji's legs. His spine was broken somehow, and he needed the cybernetics to walk again.
