It would be nice if we could order an attacked stack to retreat without going into the tactical layer. The most common scenario is a scout getting attacked by an enemy stack. It is often an unwinnable fight, but you can still surrender and have a chance they will survive. It's a bit annoying to have to go into the actual battle always and do this manually.

I think this has been brought up before, 100% agree though
It has been, and we worked on it before launch but there's no easy way to do it. We had a working version but the caveat is that it is only an option after an Combat.
We can't influence Combat Behavior from the Combat Engagement screen. The only way we can do it is by rerunning the combat through a retry and then have the units rout. This means that it is only possible once your in the Combat Results screen. At that point going into manual and routing is just quicker.
I'm sure folks have already thought of this, but would there be balance issues if the game treated each unit in a routing army as routed and roll the usual % chance on each of them? As in the combat "scene" never gets loaded and it just simulates the rout.
Also thanks for the reply! I've been wondering about this one for a long time because it causes lots of slow turns in multiplayer games when playing on classic turns with people that have irregular schedules.
we message each other "squishing your scout" frequently so we know to log on and resolve it quick so the others can continue on with their turns
