#Wightborn Transform is Ugly :(

I've seen many who agree, Wightborn just kindof looks like weirdly translucent black pudding-people.

Personally, I would suggest straightup turning the population models into skeletal. The skulls for them already exist, all you'd need is the different legs and bam, undead look cook and undead, not pug-like! Also, the option to keep skin and facial hair on your leader at least might be cool, would love a beardy lich, but I understand models might look like theyre hovering in some cases without specific case adjustments.

where can i read this community discussion

lusty ocean
#

seen it in multiple places, steam mod comments, here, reddit, I dont think it's generally seen as cool looking

spring raven
#

...is it unanimous then? or some here and there comments on it?

lusty ocean
#

fine then, I'll change my wording slightly

idk dude i haven't really looked at wightborn much i wanted to see how people were talking about it

lusty ocean
#

i dont have one specific source of it for you, i feel that way and i've seen a number of comments agreeing, noone disagreeing

#

on different platforms

#

they just kinda look like goofy chunky, wrinkly pudding-people

#

most people ive seen use Wightborn regret using it

well not really, those guys have a specific set of armor and weapons, turning the race into skeletons would jsut change their bodies not their armor and weapons, theyd still be distinct units

clearly some examples need to be provided

Good idea 👍

and is he available for drinks

he's always up for some frozen beer

delightful

#

i cant find any clear visuals of undead on AoW3 to compare

We can only compare the way they did it. In AoW3 they changed mostly the colour, made some trings on their skin and armor, in AoW4 they also partially let some units look a bit skelletton like, but since that's kind of hard to really get into the game, moving and in 3D it looks a bit weird.

#

a necromancers chest for example, is a bit "skellettonised", but not completely. That gives that weird look

#

And for real, I don't want every unit to look like a skelletton.

#

You can't see it that good on the picture, but the upper part of the head is supposed to look a bit "skellettonized", in the end such parts make the wightborn look weird

#

if you look closely on the last pic you can see the hairs from the other side looking through

#

Such things were not included in the AoW3 undead faction

#

They are using a mask to create opacity on the skin's mesh, so that the skull that is made for the skeletons shows up underneath

#

in theory thats a neat idea to make things cheaper, but in practice it creates this weird look where you can clearly see the skin is a separate mesh and it doesnt look like hanging skin it just looks like a graphics glitch/cheap

#

i dont necessarily want all things to look like skeletons, i think that would be neat but there are ways to improve Wightborn as it stands, because at it's core it's not a bad idea

#

im just saying, in it's current state it looks weird and ugly

#

I think wightborn should not remove all the hair from units, let US decide on that stuff when we customize our race by giving us more options there

#

make the race's body mesh much much thinner, closer to the mesh of the skeleton to avoid the weird situation where its clearly kindof wrapped an inch or so around the face. This very thing is already done for zombies, as they use the race you have as a base but make them super lanky, skeleton faced and give them wobbly animations

#

and finally, make the body texture, especially on humanoids, less... weird, though thats a minor one. I'd be happy to just not be forced into a colour so much

#

ah ok I see, I'm wrong, theyre actually giving them all the same bodymesh to save resources

#

well that's disappointing, and also has a graphics glitch at the feet

#

but you get my point

#

a little bit of extra work on what is probably one of the most commonly used, premiere transforms would be great

#

oh yeah dont remove helmets when transforming, takes away a looot of coolness

#

funny, none of the mystic units get their helmets removed when Wightborn

yeah im not impressed with the current reaper compared to THAT

Yes that was his best version in all series

I think there might be a few specific model issues as well - for human form dark warriors, the flesh is really in front of the skull (perhaps the skull is slightly too small?), which makes the jaw look slightly transparent and you can see through it:

#

perhaps make the head of a wightborn unit have the skin texture on both sides of the face (the inside of the head), so you can't see through bits you shouldn't? Then it would at least look like the flesh is decayed and not transparent.

#

elf and goblin look fine IMO in comparison:

#

(sorry for super pixelation, zoomed in and not using the largest resolution)

#

best example I can find of the issue is halfling halberdier in tome of wonders, if you look at it sideways you can see the jaw is transparent and noticeably in front of the skull. I'd also agree with whoever said above that keeping hats and hair on wightborn units would help with this as well.

#

sorry for the essay folks 😁

i think jsut making a custom mesh for the head for each race would fix it honestly
