This has nothing to do with the score, but so many features weren't talked about. Coop features, pantheron fighting your own creatures, hardly anything about the diplomacy in the game.

There is so much in age of wonders 4 as we know, we have hours videos on YouTube explaining certain features.

I just find this a very poor review, 8/10 is a great score, but feels like the reviewer missed so much.

Imagine thinking game reviews are anything but entertainment.

Gaming journalists by and large don't have the attention span to properly learn how to play AoW series games, let alone write a meaningful review.

Depends on the reviewer... but, uh, IGN is kind of infamous for controversial or ill-informed reviews.

So 🤷‍♂️ indeed

I've never seen a reviewer that played only a single game for a month for at least 40 hours a week.

That's partly because their employers don't let them, perhaps, but point is that they simply don't have the game-hours to make an informed opinion on why an AoW game really is good or not.

Yeah, very often game reviewers are only given like 4 hours of game time before having to write. The reviews are worth almost nothing.

Portal was great game, but part of why it always scored so high is because people could actually finish it.

Reviews days before a game is released aren't worth reading anyway. I have seen quite some of them over the years speaking of lots of bugs and two weeks later the game is patched to a smooth level. Don't ever read reviews before the game is released.

@quasi stratus @crimson zinc I understand that reviews are entertainment, but it was how the review was done, again it's not about the score. I just watched acg review of the game on YouTube and he does a far better job, miles better in my opinion. With ign being a famous site, I expected better than basic information that doesn't showcase the game. The reviewer explained in more detail on way the game had certain flaws, than going in depth on why the game has so many customisation options, and why that's expected especially with launch and that age of wonders 4 has so much, and will only get better over time. I really didn't like how the review didn't mention diplomacy and meeting other factions, which is such a big part of the game.

....neither of us argued about the score? At least I made an argument about how the reviewing is done.

#

Honestly, I'd have been VERY suprised if the review had been any better.

Isn't it IGN that used to have the meme where they either gave a game a 10 or a 7 and basically nothing else?

Most review sites are like that @tranquil scroll

They have to keep in favour with publishers or they won't get advanced copies to review in the first place

crimson zinc

Yup. Because that's what journalistic integrity looks like.

#

And then they wonder why people don't like/respect gaming journalism.

I didn't have much to begin with but a few years ago when that one guy did a review of Cuphead but was too stupid to figure out a fairly simple platforming tutorial I knew the end was nigh.

crimson zinc

Yeah, that was a prime example.

Ah few corrections there. First it wasn't a review but a Gamescom demo, it also wasn't IGN but Gamebeat/Venturebeat who uploaded the video. The person playing was the only reporter of the site/magazine at Gamescom at the time and they did not have much experience with Platformers.

This is the original video: https://youtu.be/848Y1Uu5Htk and the description expands on the situation as it caused quite a stir.

Updated description from GamesBeat PC gaming editor Jeff Grubb: GamesBeat lead writer and reporter Dean Takahashi doesn't really play platformers or sidescrolling action games. He's bad at them. But since he was the only member of our staff in Germany during the time of Gamescom, he agreed to try it out for us. What would happen next would chang...

If you listen to Three Moves Ahead I think you'll find that this reviewer has a lot of experience with strategy games. I doubt she didn't know about those features, and I very much doubt she only had single digits worth of hours in the game. But in a world where there are many reviews/ads/descriptions of a game, a given reviewer probably reasonably feels little need to mention each feature of a game.
