Please make chests have inventory.

I am playing with someone who has issues with situational awareness. They have been in therapy for this in the past. Chests spilling stuff everywhere has lead to a lot of stuff getting lost. Especially when chests eject into the abyss or down a mountain.
The latter, in fact, also makes me very frustrated with the current implementation.
Especially if your inventory is too full to accept all dropped items in time.

The current system works well when items don't have proper physics and stay where they land, or if chests are guaranteed to spill into a clearly laid out space, like for example in Borderlands. Even then this system can cause items to get lost. This is not the case with this game.

A game with player generated environments and chest placement needs a system that is "fool proof" i.e. robust enough to work with a variety of placement situations. With the current system, bad chest placements can lead to items being ejected into terrain or off of terrain.

Making chests have inventory would not only make the game nicer for my friend but also give players a chance to sort out their inventory and choose what to take.

Apart from the more mechanical issues I personally feel like it makes immersion and worldbuilding worse. Having them eject their contents is hard to explain in lore. Why would any user of a chest ever want it to do this? Even if it were explained, it will always feel more like a game mechanic, less like a part of the world. Not like an item that has been used by the people that put it there. It messes up the idea of the chests being relics of a past civilisation. It's too intentional. It becomes a gift to the player whereas it should (in my opinion) be a prize the player reclaims from the past.

If chests were to have an inventory there should be a quick loot option without having to open them. If they keep ejecting, items should at least rest where they land.

I love Lost Skies, keep it up! 😁

Definitely agree, it feels a bit weird to collect the items off the ground. I'd much prefer a quick little menu, especially if there was a keybind for "take all" to keep it quick and snappy.

Not just that, chests close to ledges spit their content into oblivion. Make the inventory system better, rip a page out of enshrouded's book , don't over complicate , don't make people play tetris when sorting things in the inventory , remember that the inventory in the grand scheme of things is not required to be a nuisance.

Out of all of the things, I'm actually pretty happy with the inventory. As long as it doesn't delete the lines when I fill it up, I'm happy to play Tetris.

I feel like it gives the items a feel of physicality and reminds you that there is indeed a thing with volume going in an item on your person that has limited Volume.

Although I think a sorting function would be a great quality of life improvement. Even though I do enjoy inventory management as part of the game.

@sharp cipher and as far as chest placement, you need to remember... the islands are designed by players, and the devs choose which ones to ad into the game.
If you pop a chest open and you aren't fast enough, you might lose some treasure.
You ever open up a box that stuff was crammed into? Stuff might spill out when opened....especially when it might be upside down.

The latter being the only way everything would fall out. Other than in that specific case, I'd love if you showed me a commonly used chest in real life that ejects its contents.

Apart from one of the most central features of a chest being that contents can't spill out easily; Stuff spilling out also doesn't make sense in most of the possible item combinations since most items are not compressible sponges that can store potential energy nor do these items usually have enough volume.

From a worldbuilding aspect you would also be arguing that:

  1. A society with the technical knowledge to create engines, advanced information technology and highly complex machines couldn't build a crate that kept its contents in standing upright.

  2. That said society was so utterly inept that while they had access to levitation technology, they couldn't figure out a way that containers would keep their stuff inside whilst upside down.

  3. A survivor of said civilisation does what they couldn't and built a gazillion variations of better containers IN A CAVE!! WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS!!!!!

Anyhow, yeah, WA’s chest had inventory, I don’t have much issues with the chests in LS spilling their loot in enclosed places, the demo has at least a couple of islands where the chests are on mountain peaks… who’s loot then proceeds to roll and fall into the abyss.

My issue is more items in the small pillars with the large turrets and the items falling to nothing this is where I world say a loot box at every ark would work so important items like recipes and more rarer resources can be picked up

Also many chests are close to walls and placed facing in the “wrong” direction, resulting in contents clipping through the wall and become unrecoverable. I’ve had to learn how to clip through the wall myself but it’s not consistent. The only consistent thing in chests’ mechanics right now are frustration and swearing

Yes please change the loot chests to just being a standard inventory! This genshin impact style where it yeets its contents onto the floor and often times over ravines into the abyss below is rather annoying and uncomfortable to deal with. plus it just leaves a bunch of clutter everywhere if you aren't grabbing everything.

I also want a change. It's annoying to have to chase the loot if the chests are on a slope/hill or cliff. Even worse is if it's an edge leading to the abyss. I've seen some negative reviews on Steam about losing loot to chests placed near edges.
The island called Sanctum of the Ancients made by devs is a prime example. All the chests by the statue would yeet the loot off the edge into the abyss below.
Another example is those shard islands with AA guns. There are chests on them, but it's likely to lose half of the loot to the abyss because of how the chests throw stuff.
I've also had loot get deleted because the chest was too close to a wall or ceiling
I get that it's supposed to be like WA for nostalgia. But to be fair, I was not really a fan of that then either.

i just thought of something. if chests get changed to having an inventory, that would make it possible to do per-player instancing, no? That would make the multiplayer experience better for those who have got loot goblins for friends.
