So yeah, Maybe its cable, You could try reinstalling drivers for VIVE In SteamVR, However I dont think it will help you

Definetly possible the cable is damaged.
I can only speak for the vive pro since that is what I personally use, and there I once forgot to properly seat the microphone cable inside the headset too (after a teardown), and everything else except the mic was still working.
Honestly? Check USB connection of the headset, and if you cannot make it work, I would just use a external microphone for VR (Wireless clip-on lavalier, many use a wireless modmic though its a bit pricy)
Good side effect:
The headsets built in mic is pretty bad anyway, using a external one will likely give you better mic quality too.
If the USB connection is fine, you could even use the USB port on the Vive headset (it has a spare one which is a passthrough) to connect a custom mic

or if you get a wired mic, the OG Vive has a extra usb port where the cables connect that you can use
Vive Pro / Pro Eye / Pro 2 have a USB-C instead
