Clean Bed Sheets
By: Lynn A.
There's something very human
about the way clean sheets feel.
When you once slept
with them wadded up,
crumbs in the folds,
corners unraveling—
like how you felt.
Various stains,
in a rainbow of colors,
recalling mistakes
that left their marks.
Gently swiping away the crumbs,
I remember how it feels
to be slept with carelessly—
and the longing
for a fresh start.
So I pull everything off,
carry it to the wash,
let it take its time.
I return to a bare bed,
and spread the new
lavender-scented sheet.
I get a little frustrated
as corners undo
with each adjustment—
but it returns
to its original beauty.
I take joy in moving the dresser
closer to the natural light,
glistening from the window.
It's the same room,
only softer.
