The first of wind that would freeze waterfalls,
A twinge of fire in a leaf
That would soon light up the whole world,
A telling of ash and frost.
Of stagnation.
The omen upon your face.
Your flickering eyes,
Your worrying triangle,
Your umms and hmms and yeahs,
Words that trail off like decaying leaves blowing away from under big leafless trees.
Signals, for the death of us.
Still we linger
For the echoes of spring and summer—
Sundresses and blue skies
Ice cubes in cups
Ice creams and evening walks, our hands clasped together—
Not stopping until there are no whispers left
Not stopping until there is only bitterness in our mouths,
An aftertaste of something sweet that needs to be washed away.

[Autumnal: re(by extension)the time period where someone or
something is past its prime]
