Ocular Cyanide
By: Charles Aldux
2/8/2024

Eyes lost to catalepsy.
There’s cyanide inside of Pepsi.

Things promised of gold to be priceless.
But they just expose the nisus.
War is coming, yet the eyes miss.
When will we wake up to the heist of this?
Cataleptic crisis.

Eyes lost to the grey.
When will it all fade away?
Eyes lost to catalepsy.
There’s cyanide inside of Pepsi.

the idea of being trapped or paralyzed by a crisis, whether it be a physical or metaphorical one, is the overarching arc here, i see

there's a haunting beauty to "Eyes lost to catalepsy.". In fact, i think its one of the best poem introductions ive seen in this server!!! tempted to steal this ahaha

the use of “cyanide inside of Pepsi” creates this jarring contrast between a popular beverage and a deadly poison which i think could be interpreted in about possible a million ways -- a modernist critique, a capitalistic critique, a juxtapositioning device, a humoristic / stoic response to catastrophe. def one of the highlight lines of the poem

i do think tho that a colloquial like "Pepsi" in a rhyming poem seems a weeee little too weird to me. it wouldve fit much better if it were free verse imo. however never be afraid to mix diff styles and forms together despite what i say !

the juxtapositon of "cynide inside of Pepsi" also continues with a mention of gold being promised to be priceless, but ultimately just exposing the struggle (nisus).
