Interesting 😄
Ahh the classic we would need to redefine what division even means.
Yay, math Poems
Actually there are number fields where division by 0 is possible, on example is the zero ring (basically there is only 0), thus 0/0 = 0 in that field
but instead in the real numbers the division by 0 is yes "undefined", but actually by definition (calculus) it's just infinity (infinity = + infinity and -infinity). it is undefined bc infinity isn't a number but rather a concept, but I've heard that someone created a number system where infinity is allowed as a number or something (haven't really looked at it). But remember, while we can say that something/0 = infinity (this means + infinity and -infinity), we can't do the same for 0/0, 0/0 is like truly undefined (this means it could be anything, ranging from the highest numbers you could think of to 0 itself)

(what?)
The laity almost exclusively refers to division in the reals when saying "division"
Or, really, when saying anything. Nothing other than the reals need be considered for them, and as such, never is
Ah, I'd love to go back to my introductory algebra class though! Having to constantly check my assumptions for what can or cannot apply in a given ring or field while proving a proposition was a whirlwind
I never really felt comfortable in group theory, though. I went into probability modelling as a specialization
I think that is the point of the poem? Unless I missed it. That is if we could divide by zero it would mean an alternate number system and "that's not what we are teaching" kind of thing. (They are busy teaching normal, real division)
Fun abstract algebra facts though the poem is meant to have an ignorant speaker. The poem is only superficially about division after all, tbf. It is about education in general. Doesn’t seem that consistently got across though, but perhaps it did
Yes, it’s about discipline and having the humility to accept knowledge from those who know better than you, yes? I got that. It’s a nice message, though rather one dimensional.
oh okay now it has much more sense, yeah sorry, I didn't get the message
Uh, not really the intent but I could rewrite it to better do its job. Very off the cuff piece
It is mainly about how getting why you are taught something is important to understanding it
Idk tbh, it wasn’t that thought out- part of the idea was about understanding why a given definition of division was used but that reveals a general concept as well imo- though never fully figured out exactly what it was myself
Has to do with a method for agreeing on definitions, actually
Very haphazard though, I didn’t take the time to seed the implications
