Have you ever lived in a volcano?

It's a quiet place,
an unreal space.

It is quite warm inside a volcano.

It's quite large in size
but nothing in it can thrive

Nothing but you.
You.

You were made for the volcano
No you were shaped for the volcano
You are supposed to spend days on end
inside the volcano

But you tried to leave
You tried to spread your wings
and abandon and desert and flee the volcano

How do you could do that?
How could you forget that the volcano is the one
who has preferred you, heard you, and deterred you
from every single thing that has tried to hurt you
and in the face of calamity
it was the one who submerged you
into its warm heart
and in return all it asked
was that you play your part.

But you tried to leave.

You tried to be free?
Well I'm not holding you back
I'm just trying to protect you
From the harsh reality
From this cruel world
I'm not trying to lock you in
I'm locking them out

I just want you to be safe
With me
Alone
Forever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever
Because I love you
But if you still try to abandon me
there's only one way I can set you free

Have You Ever Drowned In A Volcano?

Please let me know how you interpreted the poem! I'm very curious!

#

YKNOW when it (well i think it did) switched perspectives i got blown away! I see this poem as like.. a relationship (romantic or platonic) that started of as a comforting, loving thing but turned toxic and heated when one of them tries to move on. Like..

I liked this! I also interpreted it as a toxic relationship, the narrator pleading with their lover/friend that "You were made for me, you're the one!" but when the other person realized this wasn't true, the narrator became attached in an unhealthy way. To me, the volcano symbolizes anger and emotion, something that has laid dormant for years inside the narrator and is breaking free along with the other person.

I agree with the other commentators but the first thought that came to my mind was the "comfort" of trauma. I read it as if the character was burning from inside by their thoughts yet they think that the pain is deserved and comforting. They know its bad for them yet when they try to heal they fail and return to the hurting.

#

I really liked the long stop before the last line as well. It helps to convey the emotion. It flows when you read it out loud overall really liked it really enjoyable

I'm so glad you liked it! And I love that interpretation! Even I hadn't looked at the poem in that way but I totally see it!

Omg this was really like really emotional for me, it was such a strong poem and very powerful! It really hit me to the core as id kinda described a part of a relationship with my mom and that like acctually hurt. The fact that it described the feeling of like how loving she was when i was little and then as i grew up and started being independent she got toxic and controlling and i absolutely loved it!

#

Also the feeling of you being so used to that person and their personality so that it creates a comfortable feeling of all the trauma you experienced

wow great poem! everything except the second last stanza which didnt work for me, i found very great! the imagery of carring "you" in the "warm heart" of the volcano was superb! the poem starts with a question which is ofc one of the best ways to start a poem, it describes what it is to live inside a volcano, the space, the interior. the descriptions also have a tinge of inferiority, a sense of smallness to them ("but nothing in it can thrive") -- which we see later makes sense when the "I. " perspective comes it. the second person "You" almost becomes analogical with lava, how it "spend[s] days on end / inside the volcano", how it is "made for the volcano". following our previous metaphor, it can be seen as the writer telling "You" that they were meant to be, that nothing could "thrive" inside their "volcano" but the "you". the relationship dynamics that we have going on over here are such that the speaker feels they are almost a protector of "you" -- something we see quite often in romantic relationships - the speaker is glum because the person they are talking about did not find the relationship strong enough to stay inside it, they "spread your [their] wings" and left it - this left the speaker melancholic. the difference between "holding you [one] back" and "protect[ing] someone" was done really beautiful! there is almost a sense of volta in the end -- a change in tone -- where we see undertones of a feeling of the speaker to have immediate control of the "you", a need to possess them, almost a scary psychological one -- "I just want you to be safe / With me / Alone / Forever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever". and this urge of the speaker stretches them as far as to say that if the "You" does not do as they say, the "you" might even "drown" in the volcano. a really superb ending! great work!!! @gritty vale
