How to read a poem:

Just read the poem like normal, as you would read any other piece of literature, without trying to analyse every aspect. - reflect on your immediate reaction, feelings, and the meaning of the poem (this means you should free write)

read it again:

this time, think about word choice, why did the writer use this word instead of that word?

Analyse structure, rhyme scheme, and other poetry and sound elements.
Fill an entire page or more of your notebook with your thoughts and analysis.
You may also want to read more poems by the same writer and see if there is a common theme in their poetry, and it can help to understand the writer's poetry voice. Good Luck!
