Spanish Poetry and English Poetry share a lot of elements, metaphor, symbolism, theme, rhyme, rhythm.
To elevate your familiarity, there are many bilingual poetry books containing spanish - english versions of poetry.
You may also like to read up on some of the following poets:
Garcilaso de la Vega,
Fray Luis de León,
San Juan de la Cruz,
Luis de Góngora,
and Francisco de Quevedo.
They have been a source of inspiration and were part of the golden age of spanish poetry.
Spanish and english poetry also have some difference that may be important, depending on the style of your poem, that is if you choose to use a formal style, free writing is ok though also.
Here are some things to consider while writing spanish poetry:
-
Silabario: syllables or silabario for your meter scheme.
-
Accents: some spanish words have accents that may affect your rhyme scheme.
-
Vowels: Difference in Vowel sounds, There are only 5 vowels in spanish but english syllables can be pronounced in multiple ways.
-
Sounds effects: Consider including Consonance and Assonance.
-
A Refrain: estribillo or leitmotif for emphasis.
-
Spanish, unlike english, contains diminutives of words, which can be very useful for illustrating various levels of affection, politeness, size, and even displaying irony, among other things.
-
Passion: spanish poetry is not shy nor does it hold back in regards to romantic feelings.
I think you mentioned you have 1.5 years formal spanish education, so I think you'll be fine in regard to the language, but if not, writing in another language is a great opportunity to expand your vocabulary.
see it?
Yup! Thank you! This is very thoughtful
