Crafting is far too cheap compared to how easy it is to get the materials. For example: 10 iron scraps making an iron ingot. This shouldn't be possible. You should have to go to a mine to get iron for ingots. If you absolutely want scrap to make ingots, it should cost 100 scrap per bar minimum. Personally I don't think 100 is even close to enough but I'm trying to be reasonable.

Fair point but i do think in the early stages of the game if it were to take forever to make anything the rate of testing mechanics and discovering bugs would be lowered. Some people like myself personally dont have lots of time to spend on long gathering and craft times but there are other who do have the time, possibly a server setting where gather and craft costs can be changed would be great. it might help cater to all different types of players
depends on your playstyle, I think the crafting is fine even if it lacks depth but the loot is too abundant, even on less-loot (and impossible is a bit broken atm)
For me its ok like it is, but they should add an option where we can double, triple etc the cost of crafting item. This way everyone can adjust it to is preference.
Also scrap is a arbitrary unit of material, the weight is what matters if you wanna make 100 scrap be an ingot, you need to make scrap a lot lighter, adjust the output of smelting hematite...
I think decreasing the amount of scrap you get would serve the same purpose but doesn't require rebalancing the whole crafting chain
You're diving way too deep into something that is incredibly simple, which is crafting is too easy for how abundant materials are, even on impossible mode. If you're caught in a knot about the weight of scrap versus ingots, maybe the scrap is full of impurities which accounts for 90% of the weight. Solved.
Once you realize what you should be dismantling for materials and you start getting 70+ iron scrap per dismantle and can easily get reinforced brackets, pipe and sheet metal for free, the only thing left to craft with the infinite scrap materials you have is both versions wooden rods and only because I haven't been able to find a spot to easily dismantle for them. Because you can make 70 regular brackets from ONE dismantle you can easily fill a 500 lb. scrap storage in one play session which will be enough to support your character for the 40 hour playtime average if you don't have an hourly iron scrap tax.
How exactly is that fun or balanced? Surviving alone in an apocalypse is supposed to be hard.
Just like every suggestion that is asking for an adjustment or change, this is always the best fix in my opinion. However, I think this crafting system is completely broken and at the moment all it does is reduce the amount of time we play before we get bored and quit. I would bet 90%+ of people never make it to snow in their game if you start at the standard time. For me personally, I waited until August to visit the big points of interest because I had a feeling they would completely ruin crafting, and I was 100% right (to be transparent I also wanted to clear the points of interest with no water and power). After going to the best POI and bringing back multiple 3000 lb box cars of iron scrap, pipes and metal sheets I knew crafting was cooked and I only dismantled about 10% of that poi. To make it even worse the strong fences in said POI respawn before you're even capable of dismantling it all and leaving even with respawning loot/furniture off. It's literally an endless scrap iron farm. I wish I was kidding but I'm not. This picture is with respawning loot off btw. I haven't logged back in after I brought these trucks home.
Im so good at dismantling shit i can make a 300lb capacity crate outta two pencils. 💪
I agree with the point of VEINs EA being a massive testing ground and having a faster progression for as many players as possible is needed. Balancing is hopefully gonna be ongoing for a LONG time.
Ill throw in the suggestion, for metals specifically, a "Smelting" skill. and a separation of scrap iron and pure iron(mined) Scrap iron yields should be somewhat equal to weight of the item x the tier of tool x disassembling skill percentage of 100. Then Smelting yields follow the same formula. weight x smelting station x smelting skill.
You know what's also needed for a good testing ground? People playing the game longer than a handful sessions. I'd bet there are things in this game that 95% of the players never get to see because they run out of things to keep them engaged before they are even possible to appear. Like blizzards or the hard version of hordes. Even something simple like fishing. These things all demand testing too. If I am being completely honest with you, I have hundreds of hours played in the beta and 130 hours of EA. I have never once made it through winter. Which means I have never seen a blizzard, never had a real reason to fish and have never seen the hard version of the horde outside of spawning it with the admin commands. Why? Abundance of resources. Again, I would bet 95%+ of people quit for the same exact reason.
You know the improved pickaxe? Sure wish there was a reason to go get it and swing it. What about the mines in general? Sure wish there was a reason to go down there outside of the static pistol or kerosene heater both of which you can get without going into the mines.
Im agree with you about the overabundance in any aspect that doesnt make sense in general. I switched up to insanity , less loot, no respawn as im sure you did for the same reasons.
but if i went around and looted 300lbs of forks and smelted them down into 150lbs of scrab iron ingots thats my fault for being too good at the apocalypse
People swapping to a broken mode of the game is also a huge negative side effect of over abundance of loot
now all the people who have tested the game for a long amount of hours are testing something with loot that doesnt drop
do you know how long it would take you to gather 300 lbs of forks
smelt them down
and make iron ingots
if youre alone in the world
and youre a professional theif
literal years
we dont have years to wait, so make it expensive
I can tell by the intensity of your tone and they care you took parking your vehicles this game is important too you and you see the potential. Im with you in that aspect too. but patience is key and keep making your balancing suggestions to help shape the outcome.
make it cost time. time that keep you engaged in the game
If you want crafting costs super low so day 1 players can craft 50% of what's available, I understand that. The availability of loot needs to reflect that though. Iron ingot costing 10 scrap iron when you can get 70 scrap iron from dismantling a single trash can is ridiculous. It literally removes the need to get iron ore. Being able to remove electronic scraps from every single lamp in the game completely removes the need to get copper ore. Even if you were to play impossible mode, you don't have massive issues getting enough iron scrap to test crafting with. You can easily get a workbench for free at a farm.
Exactly, if a trash can weighs 5lbs then with even 100 dismant you should only 75% of that in scrap iron then only get 75% of that weight after smelting with 100. About 3 units/lbs and scrap iron should make very fragile items compared to pure iron that is mined
a simpler solution is looking at the minimum iron scrap requirement. 1 iron scrap for a metal bracket. That is the absolute maximum you should be able to get from dismantling anything in the world
You want more from dismantling? make crafting cost more. simple.
make brackets cost 5 iron, now you can have things that drop 1-5 based on their weight
abundance gone
now crafting things have meaning. it takes time and effort and love to make a single thing. you'll cherish and protect it and more importantly
your time investment feels good
