the guitar was quieter and there was usually some lead synth or something like that

cerulean pike

btw vocal skill update
I think I'm almost there for this one

#

nvm it's so terribly off-key 😭😭😭😭

rugged iris
cerulean pike
# rugged iris Noted

Well you did a good job in the expanded version but I think that maybe you could add a reversed sidechain

#

like when the kick hits other instruments get louder

rugged iris
cerulean pike
#

yw (I have no idea what I'm talking about I've never dissected an older neffex song)

rugged iris
cerulean pike
#

but at least I'm better at avoiding hitting the wrong notes now

rugged iris
cerulean pike
#

I might not be able to sing a particular melody but I already instinctively avoid notes that aren't in the scale

It's not even in Russian bro

rugged iris
cerulean pike
#

yea

rugged iris
#

I can't tell them apart

cerulean pike
#

I'm not gonna work with music in Russian until peace

rugged iris
cerulean pike

And English doesn't even have words to describe these sounds 😭😭😭

I'm gonna make a drill melody, chord progression, and ambience in C# phrygian and then transpose it to A# to use in a hybrid trap song

cerulean pike
merry hollow
#

Ooh nice

charred steppe
#

i just have to make it less repetitive

cerulean pike
#

or maybe another instrument to form a call-response with the piano before the violin appears

hushed crescent
hushed crescent
cerulean pike
#

But I can't hear the vocals being double-tracked

cerulean pike
#

And the lyrics are er... suboptimal, in my opinion

#

But overall you did a good job if you don't have that much experience

hushed crescent
hushed crescent
cerulean pike
#

And good equipment isn't really necessary

#

I mean, you sing really well regardless

hushed crescent
#

Do you have any projects to show?

cerulean pike
#

I'm listening to the only one that I recorded in English determining whether it's worthy to show

charred steppe
cerulean pike
#

Like you're just making a statement

hushed crescent
#

'-'

hushed crescent
cerulean pike
#

I guess that's how most music in English goes tho but I perceive music rather as a way to say something less directly so that not everyone can get what you're talking about

#

so it's like a little puzzle for people to solve

cerulean pike
#

And perhaps pay more attention to lyrics of songs that you do like

hushed crescent
#

Yes, I will, but those two are more explicit songs than the ones I make. Apart from that, they're a mix similar to "Neffex" itself, with some traces of Lil Peep. I could call it "Emo Trap Metal"

cerulean pike
#

I re-rendered the only vocal song I have

#

I guess I have to record vocals all over again so they actually sound like a person singing if I ever want to release it but yeah here it is

hushed crescent
cerulean pike
#

😭😭😭 Perhaps I am destined to become a bass player after all

hushed crescent
cerulean pike
#

but in this song specifically the gimmick is that the rhythm section gets louder when the bass plays

hushed crescent
#

oh

cerulean pike
#

Perhaps you've heard of sidechain

#

this is it except it makes things louder and not quieter

hushed crescent
#

This is "Broken," the one I presented above; this is part [other] of it

cerulean pike
#

as an instrumental artist I'd say you should work on your off-vocal parts a little bit too

#

It would make little difference to most people (especially in your genre) but I think that good instrumental makes even a vocal song better

#

I mean my arrangements are usually something like this

cerulean pike

I’m too broke to commission someone

rugged iris
# blazing obsidian

it needs a lot of work, it ain't terrible, the piano slaps but the rest not good.

rugged iris
#

i got this cool idea... what if chasing by neffex was rock?

cerulean pike
#

That's too slow for rock

#

Also the guitar got no transients but I suppose that's because you're using a plugin

cerulean pike
rugged iris
#

Sooo... it’s just a concept that i may not finish (i never finish anything)

rugged iris
# cerulean pike bass

I like the bass and the jazzy feel but there's overlap and muddiness (is this how they spell muddiness, im kinda of a retarded person lol)

cerulean pike
#

first was finger plucking then playing with a pick then thumb plucking then slap

#

I'm kinda bad at finger picking and slap but I've started learning slap

Im joking good for you

ember flicker
#

for the lyricists here what is your process? like im really struggling to find a process for myself. and then when you write are you just saying the same thing differently in each verse? (ping me or i will probably never see the answer)

cerulean pike
# ember flicker for the lyricists here what is your process? like im really struggling to find ...

Well I usually try to pass along a certain thought or idea by using some elaborate constructions or analogies
Poetry is essentially about saying what you want to say in a complicated way so that not everyone can understand and it's kinda fun to try to solve the puzzle of what the author wanted to say
You have to keep a balance so that the puzzle in question isn't simple and boring but at the same time isn't too hard for people so it's still somewhat engaging and thought-provoking

ember flicker
fading hollow
#

I tried making something yall 🙈

rugged iris
cerulean pike
#

It at least keeps up the dynamics

#

Though I'd record some proper guitars

rugged iris
cerulean pike
#

or maybe not

rugged iris
cerulean pike
#

the problem is that I'm way too lazy to change the strings on my guitar

#

maybe I'll do it tomorrow

rugged iris
#

Sure do your thing good luck heheh

cerulean pike
#

btw I cracked the royal road progression

rugged iris
cerulean pike
#

the japanese/anime music one

#

that makes japanese music sound japanese

rugged iris
#

lol nice how hard is it

cerulean pike
#

pretty easy actually

#

you just have to follow two major chords with two minor ones (or vice versa) and make all of them 7 chords

rugged iris
#

(didn't understand none of that but great job)

#

(hope we see you in the big leagues)

charred steppe
#

ive been trying to make a kick similair to

#

i still have to fix the rumble

but its almsot there

cerulean pike

I don't think you can even call that a kick anymore

merry hollow
merry hollow
# charred steppe Are you sure

I mean I could just be used to louder bass? Best to ask multiple people so you can get a common ground of noticeable things

#

At around the 1:38 mark I feel like the bass is good

#

Other than that, not really

merry hollow
#

I use this while also normalizing songs to 100% volume

charred steppe
#

Damn

#

I only have an eq to Make the highs lower and the lows mono

#

And sometimes to reduce the 300-400hz regions

merry hollow
#

No I didn't mean while making-

#

I meant to listen to music xd

merry hollow
cerulean pike
#

ofc it'd sound good

merry hollow
cerulean pike
merry hollow
#

And if you haven't heard many DnB songs, then they're all really similar with the drum patterns, including this which is just remade at 130 bpm

cerulean pike
merry hollow
cerulean pike
#

well ofc the samples can be both good or bad but if the samples in question are good then it makes no difference

merry hollow
#

Different sounds work better in different scenarios, that's why in a lot of packs or kits you'll see for example kicks separated by punchy to clicky to soft to hard

#

Like how 2 stomp kicks can sound similar and good but if one is making your song sound worse, its safe to say that this might not be the best place to use said kick

#

Try out more sounds, see what fits and what you like

#

Whether its related to mixing, general feel, impact, or whatever else

#

Sound designing didn't just appear out of nowhere for no reason lol

#

And especially in a lot of EDM genres, sound design is key because of how much layering and mixing needs to be done

cerulean pike
#

I have a single drum template for all my needs

#

which is like 2 options for every main drum

merry hollow
#

I can go ahead and create a sub and print it and then just knock it up 700 semitones, or I can do what sounds better to me which is going into serum, making a sub bass using a sine wave, layering it with another sine wave that's 700 semitones up and then using a filter and envelope on it to make a harmonic sub layer

merry hollow
#

I can't use the same kick in every track because for me it just starts to sound like the same thing again and again

#

I'm not trying to make 10 VIPs, I'm trying to make 10 different tracks, all that I enjoy

cerulean pike
#

Oh also I was experimenting with the royal road progression and its analogs

merry hollow
#

I like how the bassline ends

cerulean pike
merry hollow
#

So?

cerulean pike
#

FaceDerp just improvised it

merry hollow
#

Nothing's wrong with that at all lol

#

<@&948748342891008040> @Neffex - do you have stems or an instrumental available for Ready to Go, Dangerous, and Backstage? I want to make karaoke tracks to sing at the bar here for myself.

rugged iris
turbid briar
#

Your tracks would be better but for Karaoke and me singing, nobody will really be listening to the imperfections. - Instrumental for Dangerous --

Ready to go has a lead-in of about 7 or 8 seconds as it starts right there with the lyrics.

theres also a lot of grainy botanica textures

you dont really need the low frequencies

not all supersaws are highs

cerulean pike
blazing obsidian
#

saw wave is a waveform

cerulean pike
#

hate to break it to you but there are other waveforms

blazing obsidian
#

ik

#

a supersaw is a combination of saw waves and other waveforms

#

saw waves were what you thought was supersaws

cerulean pike
#

I know that there's a difference between a saw and a supersaw

rugged iris
#

Lmao

charred steppe
#

Isn’t a super saw like

#

A thing with multiple layers of saws

#

And pads

#

And what not

blazing obsidian
blazing obsidian
#

The pads are their own thing

charred steppe

owh

#

yeah idk usually i use

saws and mid basses

and pads

for saw stacks

blazing obsidian

right i forgot you produce the raw part of hdm 😭

charred steppe
#

yeahh

blazing obsidian

We're like polar opposites in the same fking genre

I'm trying to give it a desert like theme without going too stereotypical if that makes sense, like I know yeah phrygian mode or something would make it sound more desert like but at the same time its supposed to be a boss theme soooo

rawstyle kicks

cerulean pike
merry hollow
cerulean pike
#

I mean technically a raw kick would be like an acoustic kick right

charred steppe
#

rawstyle is basically

#

a more agressive version of hardstyle

cerulean pike
#

btw I got to play live drums recently and uh I was quite fond of it

merry hollow
#

I mean like no offense, acoustic sounds are nice but I can't for heaven's sake find good acoustic kicks because all of them are barely audible in whatever I put them with

charred steppe
#

xtra raw

#

which is even more aggressive

#

and modern xtra raw kicks are

#

amazing

merry hollow
#

See

#

There's a difference between aggressive because it sounds aggressive and aggressive because its actively assaulting your ears

cerulean pike
cerulean pike
#

You can say that my kicks are inaudible though and it would be a fair point

merry hollow
charred steppe
#

og raw sounds agressive

cerulean pike
#

but

#

You can still feel the beat

merry hollow
#

I'm not gonna ask you to put a dubstep kick on a guitar track aside from the memes xd

cerulean pike
# charred steppe

😭😭😭 this stuff is so processed that I can't even pin down the transient

merry hollow
#

XD

cerulean pike
#

which is like

#

the whole point of the kick drum

#

at least for me

merry hollow
#

Yeah same

charred steppe
merry hollow
#

After transient, length is what matters most imo

charred steppe
#

the first is

#

og raw

#

2nd one is like

#

zaag kicks and xtra raw ish

merry hollow
#

It sounds like something you would put over a sarcastic meme video

charred steppe
#

💔

cerulean pike
#

for a dubstep competition

#

lmao

merry hollow
#

Not even close lmao

cerulean pike
#

Now I myself don't do dubstep but @winged matrix seems pretty fond of my style so when I offered to help with making tracks for the competition he did not refuse

merry hollow
#

Fair- but again

#

That is not even close to dubstep

cerulean pike
#

Yeah but it's not a drop

#

And I'm not doing drops

merry hollow
cerulean pike
#

I'm doing the melodic parts in between the drops

merry hollow
#

I can only imagine this being in a really old orchestral dubstep song and even then theres not nearly enough layers for that

charred steppe
#

on stuff

cerulean pike
merry hollow
#

Or a big enough sound

merry hollow
#

Trap

#

Different origins

#

Future bass comes from a more melodic style of EDM Trap

cerulean pike
merry hollow
#

While dubstep comes from old uk garage stuff

charred steppe
#

futurecore....

merry hollow
merry hollow
merry hollow
charred steppe
#

a lot....

#

😭

merry hollow
#

XD

charred steppe
#

as a

#

dtm producer

#

i can agree that

#

layers are everywhere

#

sob

#

bass.. color bass.. leads

#

even snares

#

and harder style kicks

#

omfg

cerulean pike
#

maybe the reason why my music is alternative is that I like edm but I hate layers

merry hollow
cerulean pike
merry hollow
#

A lot of people exaggerate it but tbh its not even necessary its already a lot

cerulean pike
#

for me like 3 layers of a synth is already a lot

merry hollow
#

In a lot of my tracks one snare layer is usually enough

merry hollow
#

But sometimes I'll get up to 5 for certain tracks

charred steppe
#

hardstyle leads can have up to

#

8

#

fucking

#

layers

#

😭

merry hollow
#

XD

#

A lot of things matter especially in lead melodies

#

Because you're thinking of the main body, the high end, the connector between the mids and the lead, the transient, the counter leads

merry hollow
#

So try it sometimes

#

I get if you don't like layers but that doesn't mean they're useless

#

I have one main violin since its the best base sound, then I have a string section to fill out space and add a high end, then a very high end string, then a lower violin serving as a connector, then a cello for those lows, and then the bass because- well, bass

#

I'm layering that with choirs too

#

Then the brass hits are accompanied by staccato strings, multiple octaves of horns, choir hits, impacts, and orchestral drums

#

And then there's multiple different staccato strings playing the ostinato in the background constantly

#

And then there's also 2 string sections playing the chords, with another choir playing the root of those chords

merry hollow
cerulean pike
#

Uh

#

I was mixing a track

charred steppe
#

I will mix you

merry hollow
#

XD

charred steppe
#

And I will also curse you with an ott on the master

merry hollow
#

Lol

cerulean pike
charred steppe
#

No

merry hollow
#

Yeah

#

Same reply

#

What

#

Xd

charred steppe
#

I think

cerulean pike
charred steppe
#

You will probably have to cut out some frequencies you don’t need

#

To like

#

Not make certain frequencies too harsh

cerulean pike
#

So I thought

charred steppe
#

And high end a bit

cerulean pike
#

Frequencies are controlled with an EQ

charred steppe
merry hollow
#

And also

#

In an orchestral setting, different instruments are panned to different sides

#

Each of those aforementioned instruments are panned and eq-ed differently

charred steppe
cerulean pike
charred steppe
#

10000 automations

merry hollow
#

Including different reverbs

charred steppe
#

😭😭

#

I will never forget that day

merry hollow
merry hollow
cerulean pike
merry hollow
cerulean pike
#

yeah

merry hollow
#

So I'm using violins to fill a section of it

cerulean pike
#

yeah

merry hollow
#

Then using other instruments to fill in what is left over

cerulean pike
#

yeah

#

and when do layers come in?

charred steppe
#

And better

merry hollow
cerulean pike
merry hollow
#

Alright here's an example

#

If I only keep one violin how empty it'll sound

#

Give me a sec to record

cerulean pike
#

Yeah I think I understand now

#

I just care more about harmonic and rhythmic information than sonic information I suppose

charred steppe
#

Wait actually layering also applies to vocals too

#

You can sometimes hear that

#

Bryce uses a pitched down recording of his voice

#

Under the main vocals

#

Since it makes the vocals sound fuller

merry hollow
#

Oops

#

ait

#

Wait

#

That's the wrong vid give me a sec xd

cerulean pike
#

no?

merry hollow
#

Bruh I can't record for some reason

#

You get the point though

Basically

merry hollow
# cerulean pike no?

What it sounds like with only 1 violin main sound plus a bass, compared to earlier and you'll see. I get if you don't like the layers, but there is a VERY noticeable difference that would create and to me that difference helps a lot with what I'm going for

#

Anyhow I gtg rn

#

Cya everyone have a nice day/night!

cerulean pike
#

waiiit it's actually not that hard to layer synths I guess since I could just create a Patcher instrument and inside of it make all the synths that I need...

#

I've done it with piano before

#

I need sm help for vocals as I greatly wanna be an artist, if sm1's up to kinda give sm advice or stuff like that then tanks

cerulean pike
cerulean pike
#

literally the intro is a synth with percussive hihat layering

#

😔

cerulean pike
#

😭

merry hollow
cerulean pike
merry hollow
#

We layer a transient, not necessarily a hi hat, in leads and stuff sometimes

#

We do transient layering a lot but its mostly for when your leads or chords have no impact for example

#

We sometimes even do transient layering for sub basses lol

#

In real life you can't apply any effects to a guitar sound after it's coming out the speakers already

merry hollow
cerulean pike
#

but uh yeah it's hard to make a simulated guitar sound like a real guitar

merry hollow
#

Tbh its like a few days old and I think I already abandoned the idea xd

cerulean pike
#

You need to fiddle with articulation, velocity and rhythm a lot

merry hollow
#

I do plan on making a track with electric guitars later on

#

But it'll probably be a long while before that happens

cerulean pike
#

Well if it's nothing hard I could probably help

merry hollow
cerulean pike
#

ALSO THE KICK IS AUDIBLE @merry hollow

merry hollow
#

Yay

cerulean pike
#

well until the last part anyway

#

😔

merry hollow
#

Sigh

#

Its alright xd

cerulean pike
#

I sidechained the guitars to kick tho so you can still feel the pulse a bit

#

wait

cerulean pike
#

you can actually hear it

merry hollow
#

I'm ngl the bass feels more upfront than the melody

cerulean pike
#

:p

merry hollow
#

That's the only constructive criticism I can provide

cerulean pike
#

because there's no melody

merry hollow
#

That's fair then

#

And at 1:23

cerulean pike
#

that high synth is playing a loop

merry hollow
#

Idk if that was intentional too but it feels a bit too off grid

#

I get making it natural is one of the main points of any digital instrument in general but a decent-good bass player wouldn't be that far off grid

#

Unless that was intentional too

cerulean pike
merry hollow
#

I see

cerulean pike
#

so it's like a quarter note off

#

also it's slap bass :p

merry hollow
cerulean pike
#

and I think it sounds kinda cool

#

that's the whole point of the section tbh

merry hollow
merry hollow
#

I tried making a bassline before but I suck at that xd

cerulean pike
#

Also the solo was improvised

#

I literally have no idea what notes are in there anymore

cerulean pike
merry hollow
cerulean pike
#

You just take the root note of the chord currently playing and play around

#

maybe accent some other important notes in the chord

merry hollow
merry hollow
cerulean pike
cerulean pike
merry hollow
# cerulean pike You still have some kind of harmony implied

If I take an orchestral track for example I usually have a main lead line with layers, and an ostinato. The closest thing I would have to that are root notes which are played by the bass and cellos, but in those cases I wouldn't be using a bass guitar because yknow- I already go bass

cerulean pike
#

I don't always use bass guitars either but I always compose my basslines even with other bass instruments as if it was a bass guitar

merry hollow
cerulean pike
#

wait what

#

I actually have another fully mixed unpublished track???

#

I swear that just keeps happening

#

😭

merry hollow
#

Used to happen a lot when I was still releasing

cerulean pike
#

Like I work on a track but then just forget about it for some unknown reason

merry hollow
#

XD

cerulean pike
#

usually

#

but here at the end the kicks do something interesting

cerulean pike
#

I think I layer and distort them and they sorta break the drop

merry hollow
cerulean pike
#

well uhh

#

I have no better way of explaining it you have to hear it

merry hollow
#

Which is why I'm confused

cerulean pike
#

😭

#

what do you mean

merry hollow
#

Like where'd I lose you xd

cerulean pike
merry hollow
cerulean pike
#

Well you know there's the drop and it's playing and it just stops

merry hollow
cerulean pike
#

2:36

merry hollow
#

Oh I see

merry hollow
cerulean pike
#

Like when there are modulations or borrowed chords

#

so technically the scale uses 8 or even more notes

#

not the blues one the blues one is chill

merry hollow
cerulean pike
#

Well one interesting chord progression I discovered is Dm - Gm - C - A

cerulean pike
cerulean pike
#

though maybe I'd add a syncopated octave jump transition into the next chord somewhere

#

a fill basically

cerulean pike
#

Actually bass is just like drums in that regard
You got the rhythm and you got the fills

cerulean pike
merry hollow
#

I left the bass thing altogether and I'm now just working on some other orchestral piece xd

cerulean pike
#

That project was actually a test for my new default template

#

which includes slightly different compression chain and clippers for the main drums

#

Yes I've learned how to maximize loudness by hard clipping the drums

merry hollow
#

Lol

#

Fair enough

rugged iris
#

Got this cool idea but im stuck (i should use reference tracks for inspiration but lazyness got the better of me hehe)

rugged iris
#

Wish i had a guitar

cerulean pike
cerulean pike
#

This is a piano that I run through a guitar amp and my cabsim

rugged iris
charred steppe
rugged iris
cerulean pike
#

Well maybe the drums could use some expansion as well

#

If you're using acoustic drums you should add fills in between song parts

rugged iris
rugged iris
charred steppe
#

not having nitro sucks omfg

charred steppe
cerulean pike
#

maybe you should layer that into it as well

merry hollow
#

Not too sure about the chord progression though tbh

cerulean pike
merry hollow
#

And there's like 8 instruments in there

merry hollow
#

There's 2 music boxes, 3 violas, a cello, impacts, and sfx

cerulean pike
#

I learned how to use fruity convolver yesterday

#

I mean I used it before too but

#

I learned that I can just consolidate tracks and plug them into convolver to get funni effects

merry hollow
#

Lol

#

Fair enough

#

I used to use convolver a lot

#

Now I just use RAUM for the most part

cerulean pike
#

Also I learned that FM synthesis is a thing

#

Before this I only knew about additive synthesis

merry hollow
#

I also got the trial for Bx Aura and even though it ran out a while ago I can still use the default preset and that sounds great

merry hollow
#

Especially hybrid trap and dubstep
