There's basically just 2 special timeframes for ravens.

On Sunday you get the usual 2-2 like with others, so 2 from 00:00 to 12:00 and 2 from 12:00 to 00:00 and only on Tuesday you get the special one (brown), from 18:00 to 24:00.

I think they need to be feed 4 times, before they get unlocked, but not 100% sure on that.

The meal does not matter. Just the star ranking.
Star Ranking is determined by how many required ingredients a dish needs.

To approach them, just stand near them until they fly down to you. They work similar to Turtles.

Squirrels like all fruits (even coconut, cocoa bean, and lemons!)
Foxes also like bass - haven't had time to try too many others, but I do know for a fact they will not eat cod
Ravens also like 4-star meals, they do not like 1-star meals

For those who might think a 5-star meal is a lot to give to a critter, I suggest the ranch salad. It's one of the (if not THE) cheapest 5-star meals in terms of the value/commonness of the ingredients.

Quick FYI - I fed the Orchid a pink bromeliad, and it loved it.

The animation for favourite food and liked food is the same, since the last update, as far as I can tell. The only difference is what you get as reward.

Favourite: Dreamshards, Memory, Motif

Liked: Dreamshard, specific item (Ravens give Gold Bars, Sunbirds give crystals, ...), not sure if memory and motifs drop aswell

Yeah, the Orange Houseleek for Orchid Sunbird has always been incorrect. It seems to like most Purple and Pink flowers. People have already confirmed Purple Impatiens, Pink Beomeliad, and Purple Marsh Milkweed among others that work so far

it's sooooo silly how they chose to do loves vs. likes. a 2 heart animation for loves and 1 heart for likes would have been so easy. Or spammed hearts vs only a few like they do for character friendship level stars. making people distinguish different flying patterns etc. is, like I said, silly.

I don't know if anyone has noticed this before, but today I've had multiple biomes where one or more critters were simply missing, even after exhaustive searching. One squirrel, all three crocodiles, both ravens. I accidentally stumbled into a fix that doesn't require you to quit out. If you go to edit the biome (furniture), make a change (may or may not be necessary), then save/exit, the critters will suddenly appear. Making the change seems to reset critter locations, possibly because any change you made could be "on top" of where a critter happened to be at the time.

You still have to collect them by feeding critters. You don’t automatically have them by having the ultimate, it’s just what you can collect eventually with work.

Assuming no bugs, looks like the Ravens will take at least 5 feedings as today we could reach feeding no. 4 for two of them and for me, at least, they didn't unlock as pets.

Hmmm, we'll have to see what happens with others. I'm also affected by the bug where certain new items are not unlocking in collections (e.g., root beer is not unlocking despite having made it multiple times, same thing with some of the new gemstones); this bug might be preventing the ravens from unlocking for me as well.

Well, it'll be interesting to see if others have unlocked them. I've unlocked everything else but the red fox (one more early morning to go), and for most types they were completely consistent in the number of feedings. The only variant may have been sunbirds, which seemed to take 3 or 4, but that may have been due to miscounting on my part.

You can update the sunbirds on your list with the new flower information - they all love two colors of flowers, dependent on their colors! So Emerald loves all Green and Yellow flowers for example - they like any flowers they dont love ❤️

Yeah, with my test for the purple flowers, I noticed they're not all loved.

So it seems of all purple flowers, the following are the favourite flowers for the orchid bird:

and this is the only purple one that he only liked (not favourite):

Pretty sure the squirrels are twice, at least with favorite foods. Two peanuts unlocked the rare white squirrel for me. I'd unlocked all the others with apples before I was paying attention and thought to count how often I was feeding them. All other animals have been very consistent, at least with favorite foods (there's some disagreement over whether non-favorite foods unlock at the same rate, and of course, for some people unlocking particular critters appears to be bugged). Generally, the formula for unlocking the other pets is Rabbits x2, Turtles x3, Raccoons x3, Crocodiles x4, Foxes x5, and Ravens x5. Sunbirds are probably x4, but might be x3.

I've been stuck at 29 critters no matter how much I feed the other ones lol, is this a glitch or am I just not feeding the others enough. Black squirrel has been fed over 15 times and the two crocs I have left have been fed quite a few times (although I wasn't counting) and the last sunbird I have has been fed probably 5-6 times and it hasn't unlocked yet (the orchid one so its the rare one i guess but still)

It's a bug. Please report it so they get enough people mentioning it that they actually fix it. Critters not unlocking when they were supposed to was reported to them before this most recent update and went unaddressed, so the more people report it, the more likely it is to get fixed in a forthcoming update.

I didn't have a problem with it when I did it earlier. I'm not sure if this'll help but I have a general tip for you for any of the raccoons or crocs: If it isn't facing you when the "red light green light" game starts, when it lowers its head and turns to you, it will always raise its head again almost immediately, so wait for that or you'll probably have to start over.

Motifs aren't Critter specific, but generally if you aren't getting anymore, you may just have them all now. There's no real way to check besides counting/cross-checking to lists people have made.
I know it was 230 if you had the Ultimate Edition, but not sure with Standard/Deluxe or since the update. I need to count mine up again.

Something to remember about the Trello board: This is just the public list which means they more than likely have to get the necessary approval to post it on there by stakeholders. That's likely a bug. There's no indication that the game uses RNG for unlocking critters. It checks the number of times you've fed a given variant in two different places, so it's likely that edge cases mean you passed the unlock threshold and the game didn't register it. Please report this to support so they have a clear picture of how many people are affected by this bug.

Is what bad? I mean, yes, bugs are unintended game effects and are thus bad because they add variance to the expected player experience. In the big scheme of things, not having a critter unlock only means you can't have that variant as a pet while walking around. It doesn't affect any other element of the game, as there are no Dreamlight quests or duties linked to adding something to your Collection

I think the main downside to this particular bug is that is has imparted the misconception on the player base that there is a random element to unlocking companions. That means people give potentially incorrect information to other players who want to know what to expect in terms of their own game. If the devs were more forthcoming with the intended experience with feeding/unlocking critters, then we as a community would have better information with which to help one another have the best possible time playing the game.

Maybe it is supposed to be random, but we don't really know without resorting to looking under the hood of the game, which isn't supported by the EULA for the software or the community rules here. The only way to actually know for sure would be if the devs gave us any communication at all about their intent, which they have shown absolutely zero desire to do, despite the fact that such information is almost certainly not restricted behind licensing rules with Disney, because why would "we want this particular game mechanic to be random" be worth anyone at Disney's time to approve as a communication. Anyway, the best we can do now is just shrug and report things that seem to be abnormal and hope that the trello board they never update is not a reflection of the actual bugs they are actively working on addressing.

Well, let's see. There were supposed to be 230 prior to the start of the Scar/Halloween event, assuming you had the ultimate package (I think there were only 224 with the base package). The wiki page (https://dreamlightvalleywiki.com/Motifs) now lists 250, which would presumably be the original 230, plus 17 you can unlock/buy as part of the event, plus another three for increasing Scar's friendship. The new one I saw today (which is listed under the Magical filter) is not on that page, so would be a 251st.

Interestingly, this new motif rainbow castle is listed as part of the Magical category, but doesn't appear to be connected to any of the Universe filters. The white castle without the rainbow is under Cinderella, but this rainbow version doesn't appear under any Universe, not even other. If you choose all of them it is the one motif that disappears. I wonder if it wasn't meant to be released yet

going backwards a few hours LITERALLY dose absolutely nothing bad. I work nights, and I've litterly done it evert singly day since I got the game at launch. Game hasn't broken once. the game only breaks if you try to go Forwards, and maybe backwards by alot like more then a few days. There currently doesn't appear to be a set "Feed X critter Y times to unlock it." I've seen people unlock critters within a couple of feedings to still not having unlocked them to this day.

It does seem like there's a critter related bug - the devs recently added it to their Trello board.

This is set to your time, these are all the times given ingame 🙂 Although if you recently changed your time due to Daylight Savings; the game hasn't adjusted yet, so it takes the old times for all resets. I.e. Here in the Netherlands reset for critters was always at midnight, but 2 weeks ago we set the clock 1 hour back, so now the game resets at 11PM and all critter times are -1 hour for me.

As mentioned above, there is an issue with DST right now-- if that is the case, everything is off by an hour (So if it's like 12PM-6PM, then it's actually 11AM-5PM right now)

Otherwise, the game takes the time from your System's (whether the console or your computer) time

This list actually has several issues ^^; Orange Houseleek is not Orchid Sunbird's favorite and Ravens' Favorite is any 5 Star Meal
Food group in general is a bit deceiving as Ravens do like 3 and 4 Star meals (so it'd just be cooked meals) and as mentioned above, Foxes don't like any fish-- they're pretty picky. Crocodiles can also be a bit pickier with their liked gifts.

I know you didn't make it, but if you haven't cross-checked the information yourself or mentioned you're not sure if it's right, putting something like that here can just cause more misinformation to spread.

It's a large part of why Orange Houseleek being Orchid Sunbird's favorite is on so many websites despite it never actually being correct

I'm sorry to hear that you've been having trouble taming some of the critters! It sounds like you may be experiencing the bug where critters aren't tamed as companions and added to your Collections despite multiple feedings. The devs are aware of this bug and are currently looking into it - hopefully this will be fixed in the next planned update!

Just to clarify, the hour shift only applies to players who live in a country that recently changed their clocks due to Daylight Saving Time (DST) ending. This includes most of the US, most of Canada, Europe, and 2 dozen or so other countries.

If you live in a country that does NOT observe DST ending in the fall or at all, the critters should be appearing at their correct times.

two things - 1) the number of feeds a critter needs is a base of 2 and then random after that at this point, but also 2) there is a known issue with it being a bit harder than it should be to get critters to become your friend. That information is up on the trello board in #known-issues and it should be fixed on the 6th with the DLC. It can, however, still be done - it just might take a bit.

They might be - I'm one who did, and quite a few others. The red squirrel seems to haunt some folks. And the red fox, LOL Black squirrel too, actually. The white rabbit seems to be another repeated one we see a lot over in the Help chat. 🙂 So by your theory, the rabbits and squirrels should be super easy because they're starter biome, but alas....it really is just random!

Yeah, I always fed them all loved. The only exception was some Squirrels where it took one day longer for any I fed an apple before I unlocked Peanuts which is why I do think it's a minimum based off affection from which food item to some extent (though, relatively negligible), but I've never had that minimum be less.

I’m on Scar’s level 10 quest. I fed birds yesterday or like 3am this morning (maybe —-I honestly cannot remember) but I cannot feed them now for the quest and the same birds are present, except for the orchid sunbird. You can only feed each critter once a day and it resets at midnight, so if you fed them 3am or so then you won't be able to feed them again until reset. Reset might be 11pm for you if you live in a place with DST.

If you can't feed them today, it's probably that you fed them after the day rolled over. You could feed the Orchid Sunbird because it likely wasn't there when you fed the other ones as it only shows up for 6 hours on Fridays.

It is, as of now, a minimum of 2 feeds and then random after that. There is a #known-issues with critters not becoming friends, but that should be fixed in the update. What that will look like, we don't know yet. But keep feeding!!

They're like the raccoons! When their heads are up and moving around, stop moving. They will head up/left/right/center and then lower - take a step or two. Rinse repeat until you get close enough.

I would have preferred if they gave rares a second iteration at a different time, for example the red fox on a weekday evening. That way it gives more people a chance to get that can’t because the time conflicts with life necessity (ie work, school, sleep). But, at least with bigger stomachs I can complete the feed Dreamlight task for each type a little quicker. I’m getting close on all.

As others have stated, all Foxes' Favorite food is White Sturgeon. Their Liked foods are Bass, Crabs, Salmon, and Tilapia.

White Sturgeon can only be found in the Frosted Heights in gold bubble fishing spots.

Bass can be found in the Peaceful Meadow, Forest of Valor, Sunlit Plateau, and Frosted Heights if you do not fish in a bubble fishing spot.

Crabs can be found in the Frosted Heights in blue bubble fishing spots.

Salmon can be found in the Sunlit Plateau and Frosted Heights in white bubble fishing spots.

My personal experience was that the one Squirrel I fed a non-favorite to took a day longer than when just feeding favorites for every other Squirrel.
I think it may do so slightly, but it's relatively negligible in the long run.

They should. They love 5 star meals, and like 3-4 star meals. If you feed them 5 star meals, the amount of time to have them as a companion is sooner than if you fed them the 3-4 star meals. But it is random when they will become a companion.

Still not entirely sure that's the case-- if it is truly random, people getting the same days for the same Critter multiple times, especially all five, is incredibly rare and a lot of people had that count.
I feel it's more likely other numbers are the odd ones out due to generally being lesser overall which make it feel more buggy than intentional.

Only the first feed of the day counts towards friendship, so don't bother feeding them multiple times a day unless you fed them the wrong thing. Rabbits do not like wheat - lettuce and carrots, with carrots being the favorite (naturally).

It takes a minimum of 2 feeds, and then it's random chance after that when they become a companion. It just takes patience to take wild critters. 🙂

I STILL can't feed ANY of my critters. My game started out playing just fine, but when they had the first update to "fix bugs" that's when my game when nuts! Suddenly all kinds of problems began happening. I didn't TT, but when I was checking my settings I noticed my date & time was off a bit (I had been playing ACNH). So I started the game with the incorrect date & time but it worked fine until the update. I wrote Gameloft with a detailed problems list, she addressed the first issue that was something they commented on in their Twitter feed, but completely disregarded all the other issues. I gave her benefit of the doubt thinking maybe she would contact me with more info...NOPE! I haven't heard a word from them, she just wrote me off.
Anyone else having issues like these? Any suggestions on what I should do? I don't want to keep writing them if they are overwhelmed & won't respond...IDK

The game itself wouldn't have set your system date off. If your system date was off when the update hit, though, it could indeed have caused a whole host of issues.

Support is a minimum of 5 weeks behind right now, but if the issue is related to your system time being off, that's not something they can really fix. How far off was your time?

I know for me, for most turtles it was two feeds (same with rabbits and squirrels), except for the special ones it took at minimum 3 (special turtle will be on feed 4 this time). All the ravens were 3 feeds, except for the special one. We’re on feed 4 I think and I still don’t have him. Raccoons were all 3 feeds, same with foxes (but I haven’t gotten the red one yet, can’t seem to stay awake long enough lol).

Good luck! You can check the Collections screen each day to see which colors are in your Valley that day. Some special colors only appear once a week so it can take a while, but if you keep trying you'll get them all eventually!

Also you have to do it at a distance bc any time ur near them they will run off so making sure they stop look for landmarks near them like a flower or a rock and build around that item making sure you don't have any gaps allowing them to escape I find the trunks really easy to work with. You also have to make and area that you can get into bc you can't activate the approach on the other side of the trunk. It's a huge process but beats chasing them for hours with no luck.

The raccoons and crocodiles want you to play a sort of Red Light, Green Light game with them. Walk toward them while they're crouched down, but stop as soon as they raise themselves up. Repeat until you're close enough to feed them.

You might need to try approaching them more carefully to start with, so as not to scare them off before you even begin. Halt immediately as soon as they turn to look at you, and then inch forward just a little at a time while their heads are down. I promise it works once you figure it out!

Yeah, it can be finnicky and sometimes you'll notice them just a SECOND too late so they run off and you need to find them again without getting too close. I kind of wish there was a bit more leeway for it.

I like to think of the raccoons and crocodiles playing red light green light. Down is green light up is red light. Once they “lock in” aka face you - you gotta move slow though and only take a couple steps at a time.

I know that the crocodiles are mirrored off of the raccoons, but I swear the red light green light doesn’t work as well on them as it does my favorite trash pandas. Is there a better method or something? They’re the only critter I cannot get and it’s so frustrating

I’m not near my device at the moment but yes, i just do a big square. It can be a bit tricky the first time you do it but its essentially the same thing as fencing in a gardening buddy when harvesting

Oh I don’t even fence in my gardening buddies, but does that control, say, your pumpkins from launching from one end of the forgotten lands to the back corner, if you have a fence around your plot of garden?

So when you fence the buddies in, they won’t spew the pumpkins out until you release them from the fence. It makes it easier to pick up all the extras by walking through it, vs manually picking each pumpkin up

Just to add on, most of us feel that the crocodiles do play the same game as raccoons but are much more sensitive. Their especially harder to get the game started, once you engage the red light green light it’s a short amount of steps before they pop up.

Hello, I had posted previously regarding rare critters not showing up in their time window. I have been checking at multiple times during their time window, and often outside it. It seems they are appearing, but multiple hours off, and sometimes outside of their time window entirely. I haven't determined the exact pattern yet as I have only just started noticing. Has anyone else experienced this? My time is synced via internet

I know an hour being off from DST changes was pretty normal but definitely not to that extent. My only guess would be it for some reason going by server time and not local time. What timezone are you in?

My only other idea would be trying to place something in the Biome and see if that helps refresh things, but since your entire issue is them showing up at completely other times versus not at all, it may not do anything.

Another possibility could be trying to play offline? See if there is any changes in that regard to see how it could be getting the information for when to show up.

I'd also check to see if your Steam account or wherever you may be playing it user account timezone/country matches your devices.

If that still doesn't yield anything, I'd try repairing local files (Steam) or uninstalling and reinstalling

I have heard of so many Switch specific issues so it's definitely possible. I would definitely double check your Nintendo Profile/Account to make sure the timezone matches up

My Nintendo account timezone matches, EST. I think it is indeed a timezone issue though... I seem to be getting some events synced with PST. Confirmed the raven popped up yesterday at 6pm PST. Sleeping schedules also seem to be synced to pacific. Oddly, my shop refresh today was synced to eastern. Could it be perhaps because I had synced to pacific at some point then switched back to eastern? No clue. Anyhow, I'm happy that I hopefully have a pattern to follow now, and if anyone has the same issue with timezone switches hope this can help 🙂 thanks again @burnt ridge

Oh. My shop refresh was on time as expected because it isn't synced to local. Nvm there 😁 I think I am just straight up on Pacific time. Strange since I started the game on Eastern and synced to pacific maybe two days this year

How many times do you have to feed a critter before it’s added to your collection? And are there any other requirements, like if the critter only shows up on Fridays feed it two Fridays in a row or something? I swear I’ve fed some of the rare critters twice or more but they still haven’t been added to my collection. Do we have to feed the rare critters more than the others?

It can take several feedings! But only the first feeding on any given day counts toward that goal, so the rare critters can take multiple weeks since you can only feed them once a week to count toward taming them

For whatever reason, sometimes some Critters take longer for people. All of my Ravens took the same amount of days, but just need to keep feeding them once a day (or well, once a week in this case) until it finally befriends you.
