How does /clone work from a technical perspective?

How does /clone work from a technical perspective? When pasting to a coordinate, which point is the origin and pivot? Is it determined by the first command argument or the second? Or is it just an arbitrary algorithm deciding where to place the origin of the paste? It isn't very clear to me.

It doesn't matter how you choose the area with the first two positions, the placement will be from the third position in a positive direction along the axes.

the third coordinate which determines the position to place the structure is the most negative corner of the structure

All commands like that (clone, execute if blocks, etc.. ) all work towards the positive directions
