#Better Iron Farming, Datapack Idea Progress

After discussing and reviewing some people's ideas on iron farms, I decided to execute my ideas and hope to get some feedback.

nErF iROn fArMs lol is not the goal. Instead i hope to make multiple alternatives that compete with current iron farms. Note, my personal gripe with them is I don't want to enslave and torture my villagers (I like to roleplay lol)

I also have considered what could be useful for each regular worlds, superflat, and skyblock

  1. Ore Zombie, direct competition: naming a Zombie "Ore" will cause it to begin producing an iron ingot at its feet every few seconds. A name tag called Ore can be crafted from 1 iron, flesh, bone, gunpowder, and string. (Prolly change, mostly for testing)

This is to create a direct alternative that builds on getting iron from zombies

  1. Ore Trader: a custom wandering trader and can spawn after crafting the OreTraderLetter and throwing it on the ground. It trades 64 cobblestone, 32 Basalt, 16 purpur, or 32 rotten flesh for 1 ingot. Crafting recipe is (probably temporary) 1 iron ingot and 1 dirt block.

This is to make getting more iron an interactive thing for a cost that requires some work, gets easier in late game, supports both miners and fighters

  1. Amethyst mining: Standing on an Iron Block while mining Amethyst clusters will produce an iron ingot at one's feet. Allows amethyst to be a place to return to for getting more of ores you've already found.

Would like to see this expanded for more ores, and maybe add some "cost" or "input" with amethyst shards somehow

  1. Iron Caller: an enchantment for melee weapons that will produce iron ingots after about 5 hits. Exclusive with mending. Dunno how I want it to be obtained, for now it has a simple crafting recipie

Note these ideas aren't meant to be balanced per se (yet), but be great competitors for current iron farms and offer alternatives other than just go mining as usual.

Thoughts on the overall ideas? All the minor details are subject to change

Instead of a nametag why don't you make it a splash potion that applies on the zombie?

I think it plays better with the expectations of mechanics in minecraft

#

We have oozing, infestation, and other potion effects like it

That's a neat way to think of it, I haven't made a custom effect/potion before tho lol. Is that a datapack thing?

I think so? I don’t remember

Custom potion effects aren't really possible, you can replace for example the luck / unluck effect with a resource pack but then you can only have 2 different potion effects and you'll have to modify the fishing lootable to make sure the effects don't have any unwanted changes

Ah interesting to know. I do want the status to be permanent and controllable, so for now name tagging makes sense.

Crafting recipie for that name tag is definitely too easy. Want it to be further along the progression of typical skyblock/superflat worlds. Thinking of using a water bucket in the recipie

Changed Iron Caller to be on 15 hits and made it give raw iron instead. Thinking 10 might be the sweet spot. Working on getting it as an uncommon enchantment on the table

what if you just increase the drop rate of iron in the zombie lootable without it needing the name

but not make it guarantied
