Do we have to use /particle and summon only one particle? I'm not sure I understand the wiki but I think it says that's how to control the particle's motion

Some/most particles can be given motion in a direction by using caret notation for their delta arguments with a very high value in a single direction, and a very low but positive speed, with a count of 0. For example, particle smoke ~ ~ ~ ^ ^ ^1000000 0.0000004 0

if you want to make something like a cloud of particles or a lot of particles converging or making a pattern you will likely need some form of function generator or just a lot of particle commands

#

because you cannot, in fact, make a single particle command that summons multiple particles and still gives them speed
