Bringing in the end of everything we know and cherish. A sickness infecting everything and everyone in contact. Slowly turning them into a mysterious stone like substance.
And as the years past the stones break. Revealing not a human but some sort of machine or...Golem like thing? It's clearly not human anymore. They begin to scoure the lands but the thing is...they don't seem to want to hurt anyone.
Their actions are bizarre and rather frighteningly unknowable but they don't seem to pose an inherent risk. It's just now they're here. The survivors have to content with their existence.

This is the idea of RAID {specifically RAID1 / a mirror}. Though RAID wouldn't be a backup persay. RAID is more just to protect against catastrophic hardware failure, where if one drive croaks, the other has an identical copy.
