#Rename Price

I feel like the price for renaming oneself in the game is absurd!! Look at any other game, strategy or otherwise, and the price to change your username is incredibly low, being only 10-20 of the rare currency (in this case, coffee) and often being free

meanwhile, in Phobies, it costs 800 rare currency to rename yourself!! Which is absolutely insane! And directly translate the "real world money -> in game currency" it costs TEN US DOLLARS to change your username! It’s absolutely nuts! I wholeheartedly think that the price for changing your username should be HEAVILY decreased!! I feel like the price shouldn’t go above 100 coffee, this is the LEAST I can ask, and I’m sure plenty of people will agree with me!!

Personally, I like the price being high so people cannot name change frivolously.

I did a quick Google search (I live in NZ, hence the localised results), but most of the top results are people asking why it costs $10 to change your account name in a game:

According to a brief Google search for each game:

  • In Skullgirls it costs 500 Theonite (about $10) to change your account name.
  • In Clash Royale it costs 500 Gems (about $5) per previous name change. So the first is free, then $5, then $10, then $15 etc...
  • ZenlessZoneZero is a single player game with some co-op modes. It's free to change account name.
  • Mech Arena has an escalating cost like Clash Royale (The cost is a bit cheaper though, I think 125 A-coins per previous, or $1.
  • Same for Brawl stars, it's 30 gems per previous change ($2)
  • Zeptolab games like cut the rope? That's not analagous at all. Neither is Angry birds 2.
  • In PvZ (I assume you mean Garden Warfare), it just uses your platform username, like your PS or xbox live username or whatever.
  • Albion Online seems to have no character name change feature.
  • My Singing Monsters is just a fun single player / coop game. It's not very similar, but the name changes appear to be free.
  • Rec room is like 3D Roblox or something, of course you can change your display name for free. Your account name can be changed once every 180 days.
  • Terraria is a single-player game from 2011, you can connect to servers for some co-op play though. It's like saying you can change your name in MineCraft.

So, basically, almost all of the games you listed that have online competitive multiplayer have $10 name change costs, or ramping costs which can go above $10 pretty quickly.

And this being the industry norm isn't exactly an excuse

#

There're a lot of ways to limit the frequency of name change that isn't just slapping a price on it and call it a day, the once a month thing mentioned being a reasonable idea

#

There is quite a discrepancy between how convenient name changing on social media platforms is vs in games and i would like to know why. I genuinely feel like a lot of these problems would be solved if there's an account id separate from the name though I am not an expert on this stuff

And I would argue just because their argument was flawed doesn't mean there aren't people frustrated with the name change cost

and that frustration is valid

and so I would like to discuss why people are frustrated and the possible solutions

I personally like if they add the name change as an addon to a kind of subscription model like the pass, keep it available only once a month, basically just adds more incentives to buying a pass or sth similar, maybe make it like a vip system, they would just basically be adding sth that ppl have incentives to spend on

I think this way people wouldn't feel like they're actually just spending for the name change but rather it's an additional value thing

#

I recognise this game has to make money and this is pretty un predatory compared to most things imo

#

The vip system could also be a thing for people who do not necessarily want to grind the pass to get passive rewards

#

this is basically my way of trying to improve the name change system while also turning it into sth that might be worthwhile for the team to spend development time on

I understand my argument is very flawed but I still feel like the name change price is kinda unfair… maybe that’s just me, but perhaps I can modify my argument—maybe compromise for 400 coffee rather than 800?

that way it’s still partially in line with the industry standard, but it doesn’t make a divide between saving for card packs and saving for the name change, considering it’s easier to give up a 300 coffee pack than an 800 coffee pack

In addition to this, make it so you can only change your name once per month with payment to further limit the frequency of name changes

Name change shouldn't really be sth that allows someone to "escape responsibility" if u really think of it like that, moderation as a whole should be handled by the devs anyway not the playerbase themselves (though I do understand that this is very imperfect and unreliable sometimes), there's a lot of ways to make it so that u can track who a person is even if they changed their name anyway, like assigning an unchanging player id to everyone

#

Even then if a person is dedicated enough no matter how high the price it's truly not hard to escape being identified

#

If you are so worried about the frequency it would be even better to limit it to sth like once per 3 months
