a great conversation. It has given me a very clean idea of the mandate. Which was always clear. I just didn’t focus.

#

@silver ice I think if you had the local areas set up the organizations and then they take care of all the legwork. (With a consultant) . I think it would simply be a donation by nouns. So liability and red tape is not shoulder by any of the ecosystem. @soft zinc

I am waiting for Gami to share the contact from TSP so that we can see how to do the big projects! I am going to look for a local consultant who can give us good Fingerboard designs which maybe we can partner with TSP to turn into real parks in the future with Nouns Funding!

Building Fingerboards seems Much more economic with out DAO setup! But this is still under alot of idea development stage!

yes please we can make some custom things for this

I have some connection with the Church of skating in St Louis so may be opportunity to do some gnarly stuff there

This Post is to discuss the basic framework on how the GnarsDAO will fund, build and monetize extreme sports facilities such as Skateparks to achieve the DAO's mission, and proliferate The Nouns Brand.

#

NOTE: Preliminary research Shows that Skateparks typically cost 75ETH - 120ETH ($75k ~$125k) for a decent park worth for a community and can go upwards of $100m depending on the use. The Major Issue to be addressed when acquiring DAO properties like this is how the DAO members can use their governance for IRL business decisions.

#

A Skatepark can be administered using all DAO members as Board of Trustees for the Skatepark Management can be vetted, selected, terminated or even upgraded from DAO members themselves.

#

This thread is mainly to get your ideas on Where can we build these skateparks, best way to build and how do we make our skateparks serve the DAOs mission and also proliferate Noun culture

I think we would have a greater impact partnering with The Skatepark Project, who we've already donated $8.5k to in the past, since they've 25+ years experience building skateparks.

The big issue here for us includes cost (even Nouns DAO attempted a skatepark proposal) and the huge administrative overhead of securing public land, getting council approvals, insane public liability, and so on.

Different story on private land, but even still, due to associated costs, this type of thing would be something we'd need to propose to Nouns DAO.

In saying that, you're on the right track here. But in a different way than you might expect.

Gnars DAO treasury since inception has been focused on this:** travel grants for extreme athletes and development of nounish apparel they can wear while they "reach the people, places and things that bring out their best."**

Proliferation of the Nouns meme, and in turn our DAO, will be most effective when done by Nouns Athletes themselves. So with regard to skateparks, I would encourage thinking more about things in this way:

  • what skateparks have our riders always wanted to shred?
  • do any of these skateparks have openings for mural painting?
  • etc...

Reason for this long message is I really want to demonstrate the level of thought and planning I've put into how focused we are with our treasury. I've carefully considered everything to ensure that we can have an impact while we are small and do so in a way that scales effectively with the brand as we grow our treasury.

What I'm most passionate about is helping artists create. I see extreme athletes as some of the most inspiring and expressive performance artists ever.

Combining our support of them with the work of other artists in a collaborative manner (eg. streetwear), as a community, will be a profoundly powerful way of proliferating Nouns and in turn, Gnars DAO.

Additional to the skatepark point, we can also have a far greater impact for a comparably tiny cost, by partnering with FISE and Pannonian, and other touring extreme sports festivals.

Their events attract over 150k - 600k attendees, get broadcasted globally, reach millions on social media, and end up creating many hours of content that gets referenced and reused repeatedly over time (eg. think of when tony hawk landed first ever 900, which was on a demountable ramp as part of a contest).

I've been talking with the organisers of Pannonion Challenge with Joe Atkinson and we have an awesome opportunity that will likely be repeatable with other events. In this particular case, in exchange for flying in some judges, we could have our branding all over their ramps and even the opportunity to get deeper involved.

eg. Artist exhibitions, stalls at the events, media coverage, be an official NFT partner to help them leverage web3, and so on. Big focus for me: How do we get the best bang for our buck, while staying agile, adapting to change and creating a grassroots brand that people will care about. 🙏

#

Just wanted to add. Despite my lengthy thoughts above on what we should focus on instead, please know that I love your enthusiasm and passion. Keen to help guide it in the direction that has the most impact. Thanks you so much! ❤️

I see Gami, thats why i felt it was cheaper to build such parks in like Europe Middle East Africa region, where overheads and council issues are minimal.

#

Looking where i live right now, even though i want to have an impact on Extreme athletes, we don't have the infra to even skate. I do agree that such a project would be best brought to the NounsDAO, which i beleive we can do with the Gnars Noun

#

I agree with the Agile approach and this can be something we build overtime. I can't wait to get my hands on the streetwear and have a few of our athletes perform in em.

Awesome. So yeah, as we build momentum and reach the right scale we could make this happen. ☺️Something for a bit further down the track as you said. 🤘

But that said, regarding The Skatepark Project, it’s the new name of Tony Hawk Foundation and they’re a charity that does one thing — build skateparks where people need them.

I’ve built a relationship with their head of development, Lily Schwimmer and when I first started Gnars, before it was any kind of DAO, we donated $8.5k and received a letter of thanks from Tony Hawk (it’s in #📢┥news somewhere).

Here’s our Endaoment page where you can click through for more info.

# silver ice Can you tell me more about this skatepark project?

I’ve had a call pretty recently with Lily about them expanding their operation globally. Sounds like they have a bright future of amazing charitable work. So if we could cooperate with and consult to them (eg. @velvet surge has built his own park and consulted on many others) there’s plenty of potential to play a role in doing some good. 😊

#

And then additional to that, once we are more established and with our connections, we could finally bring that Nouns Skatepark proposal that fell through (think it was 4156’s idea) to life and do so with the help of experts. ❤️

Building a Gnars DAO Fingerboard Skatepark

#

After the feedback above from Gami, we are renaming this discussion to fingerboard parks. These are much smaller and will help proliferate the nounish and gnarsDAO mission

Just saw this thread now

I'll read it later

It passed

so it's going happen, right?

already happened actually

3 months for a process that started in march

Originally the idea emerged to build a skatepark, with nounish features.
Nouns DAO quickly learned how hard it is to build skateparks, so instead got in contact with The Skatepark Project (Tony Hawk Foundation, who we've also donated to).
The project evolved into creating and giving away a bunch of skateboards instead.

This channel in Nouns discord was originally called "skatepark" @soft zinc

Main point being, for an IRL skatepark, best way to see that happen is through Nouns DAO in partnership with The Skatepark Project (I've personally been involved in building a skatepark in my hometown, so much admin, liability, red tape etc)

If you consider in Brazil prices are 1/5 of US, we could do a skatepark here....

The Skatepark Project and Nouns DAO are still in contact, as am I with Lily Schwimmer, so eventually could see it happening.
Less about the cost to build, more about the overhead with approvals, insurance, etc. Best done by the experts, TSP build them everyday (and they're a charity) so I think we should still lean into making it happen. But, do it like "Gnars DAO x Nouns DAO x The Skatepark Project" (so as Gnars DAO we can eventually propose this to Nouns DAO, eg. revive the original proposal)

One thing i discovered in my research to build skateparks in Africa is that its better to actually buy the land. Hold it in a DAO Corp Structure and then all the redtape, politics and approvals are greatly reduced

Same i realized talking some friends of mine in Shanghai China and UAE.

With NounsDAO approval we can build skateparks for fractions of the cost. But i deeply agree with @kindred niche on this because we can benefit from TSP years of experience and build amazing, long lasting skateparks

#

The only reason i want to fight for this Prop is because we actually don't have any good skateparks where i am from.

Even if i get to open a gnarsDAO shop in my city, kids will buy the streetwear and all the amazing merch we going to make..

But they actually don't have anywhere nice to skate and then if they have nothing to skate on. How will we find new global sports men and women to sponsor

Yeah, I also would prefer avoiding any need to create complex legal structures, or put my company at any additional risk.
Already now things are complicated enough, where my company is running like a normal business, with a community treasury adjacent, still legal stuff to work out.
But also, if there was the opportunity for Nouns DAO to fund something and you (or someone else) assume local corporate responsibilities etc, then that's possible.
Just that in terms of Gnars, the clear mandates of "Sponsor extreme athletes" and "Commission artist collabs" are very intentional.
Simple is best.
