As most of you are aware I’ve been writing the weekly newsletter Gnarly News for the past several months. To date I’ve been doing it without compensation, but would like to request retroactive funding for the first ~3 months of newsletters and funding to continue doing so for the next 3 months. My full proposal can be found at the HackMD document here: https://hackmd.io/@0xsatori/BkrwoBSui. If there are any questions or comments please let me know!

Total = 7.40 ETH for 25 Publications over 6 months

Seems very doable

I really love all the Gnarly Newsletters you've been putting out. Tons of great info whenever I miss something and keeps me up to date with everything. Seems like a no brainer to me

Man I know how troublesome putting all those info in one newsletter is, respect to you and you definitely deserve to be compensated for what you're doing, not just for the Gnarly news but for anything you do for Gnars.

I wanna be honest here and I will be. 7 ETH is kinda of a big ask for the 61 ETH we currently have inside the treasury BUT I will vote for this proposal cause you're one of those people that DO SHIT DONE and you've done way more than Gnarly News. You definitely deserve to be compensated for your GNARly work G!

I am with knowhow on this one. Cant vote no after all that you did and do for gnars. if it was just the newsletter I would say to reduce the amount per newsletter even if that reduces the amount of work you have because of the moment of the treasure.

Again, I am voting FOR, but I would prefer if we could pay the retroactive over months (montly) so we can give or treasure space to grow. mainly because we would be spending on something that is already done ( I also know that would be a pain in the ass creating a lot of proposals about the same thing)

So, sadly, I had never seen this newsletter until I investigated this proposal. However it is just too steep and while great curated content, not a driving enough project for 10% of the treasury. I applaud the retroactive work, but that is how you prove you are the right person for the job - remove that and it would be a more realistic ask.

#

I'd also prefer to see 2 issues a month for the next 6 months. This would allow more thoroughly vetted content, user feedback, and community interaction. And make it more manageable on your side.

#

This space is moving VERY VERY FAST right now so I can see the urge to document and share everything, but filtering the noise from the signal and more call to actions would be helpful. I also think this dovetails with the podcast and would be something I'd want working in tandem and our "official" single source of truth.

#

I'm currently voting no, but I want to make it clear I just think it needs to be scaled down, scoped to deliverables that accomplish spreading community goals, and welcome a revised proposal. I'm biased against "Weekly" news and would rather see an old school monthly skater zine with our info than a tumblr-esque feed.

would you say print is still alive if we mint 1000 issues only?

I'd do it like the punks comix and make them NFTs themselves 🙂 although I fucking love print for real

we can do both! punks comix X gnarsDAO - do you know anyone over there!

Hmmm.. I haz hodls but I haven't been active. I'll go check and see if I recognize any names

# vestal cave So, sadly, I had never seen this newsletter until I investigated this proposal. ...

Going to address each item, bear with me.. first in regard to not seeing the newsletter previously. I do post it here in discord every week, the domain is in my handle so it's shared every time I post, I tweet out the newsletter, and we also discuss it weekly on the Gnars Jam Session. So I feel like that even more so enforces why it's an important resource to have - if you aren't seeing the newsletter, how much else are you missing? It's quite a bit of work to stay on top of all of the updates in here and the nouniverse in general, and all of the important stuff is aggregated in there.

Regarding retroactive work - I think there's a pretty strong precedent within DAOs for doing work and then requesting funding after the fact. And I feel strongly that this is something that should actually be encouraged - do the work, prove you are capable and providing value, then request funding. If the work is valuable, people will support you. Discouraging requests for retroactive work is a net negative in my opinion, we want to encourage people to go out and DO things even if they aren't guaranteed to get paid for it. But the fact that they actually did it shows a lot about the type of builder they are.

As for 2 issues a month - one of the key things is highlighting proposals, and 2 issues a month basically makes doing that pointless due to the timing of our props. Even weekly there's potential for active props to not be included in the newsletter. Say a prop is posted right after the newsletter goes out, by the time the next newsletter goes out voting has already ended. But in general, weekly newsletters have a good chance of bringing attention to props while voting is open, hopefully reminding people to get out and vote. A monthly newsletter wouldn't be able to do anything but mention proposals that went up that month.

There have been 2 weeks since I started the newsletter that I didn't put out a publication, mainly because they were around holidays and there weren't many updates, so I didn't want to force it. I'd love more community interaction and feedback, and I hope people feel that I am welcoming enough to reach out to me with comments. I always want to improve, so if there's something in the newsletter I can change, remove, add, etc **please ** let me know. I really haven't received much critical feedback and that would actually be greatly appreciated.

Can you expand on what you mean by "deliverables that accomplish spreading community goals"?

And I could see a monthly zine being something we do as well, but I think that would be more to highlight athletes, events (like I LOVE XV), and content/media rather than news, updates, and proposals. So I feel like they would have different purposes, but definitely open to exploring options.

Couple other things I'd like to mention. Our average open rate is actually really high, especially when you consider that almost 300 of the subscribers were imported from Gami's email list. Standard open rates are ~21% (first screenshot), and currently I'm averaging 31%. And actually, if you don't count the first publication which went out to 4 people since there were no subscribers yet, the average open rate is actually 34%. Some publications had as high as 40-42% as shown in the second screenshot from substack. And again, without the imported list this rate would likely be much higher.

As far as pricing, there is quite a bit of prerequisite knowledge, awareness of the culture, and time active online to understand and keep up with everything that's going on, and that's on top of the actual writing. In addition, this pricing is in the bottom 25% of yearly pay (if extrapolated out at current ETH prices) for newsletter writers per ziprecruiter (third screenshot).

And just to give a bit of comparison to other nounish newsletters I'm aware of, here are the latest props for the Nouns and Lil Nouns newsletters. Obviously there's not a direct comparison to maty's prop since he also includes the proposal tracking, but compared to these I feel that this is a very reasonable ask.

I'm actually actively working on proposal tracking as well, but don't feel that it's ready to request payment for just yet. Would you prefer to see a prop beforehand rather than requesting retro funding once I'm ready? @vestal cave

#

Anyway, sorry for the wall of text but just wanted to be sure I addressed everything thoroughly!

Just want to pop in and say why I voted against this prop. I think newsletters can be good, but do think it's a bit archaic and not where our audience resides. Would love to see Gnarly News test other communication outlets that might have more reach. If that grows and we see success, I'd definitely vote to fund.

rare nova
#

Also, curious if you can expand on your thoughts against retroactive funding. This is a pretty common thing among DAOs so I'm a bit surprised to hear several people be against retro funding in general

Visual outlets like tiktok/ig reels/snapchat. Having someone enthusiastically tell the stories and share clips from gnarthletes

#

Retroactive stuff I've seen back in the 2016-18 cycle where there becomes this tragedy of the commons scenario where people try to pull funds based on previous efforts simply because there's funds out there to give.

#

Enters this weird "But I already did all this work" thing. When oftentimes the work wasn't asked for, or ineffective. < Not pointing out you, just observations from watching treasuries dwindle in other circumstances

vestal cave
#

First off, @rare nova I want to make sure it's clear my ignorance of the newsletter is on ME not you - in anyway. I actively mute channels in discords and missed this while onboarding myself. I'd love there to be a link from the about area in gnars.com to help individuals without guides to find the right things.

#

I do like your responses to my other questions and have changed my vote to abstain for now. I am not against retroactive grants in general, but I don't think it is something our treasury can currently afford. Looking at the comparisons to other proposals I do see yours as being competitive, but the difference in treasuries can't be ignored. I'm going to think on this, thank you.
