It's mostly preference, the game attempts to be balanced enough to allow multiple routes and tradeoffs

Just try out guns and pick what feels good. I had a great time with the shakal when I had enough AP bullets to use, and even before then it easily handled mid game

And eventually you get to large rifle ARs where they all feel pretty good but are expensive as fuck to supply ammo

If anyone encounter the same issue when starting a new game: It resolved itself when I removed the GAMMA MCM Values that I had renamed for backup purposes and used the default one. A pita to change all the settings again but at least its working. The odd thing is that instead of Sarik being in the Rookie Village, there was a random enemy stalker there who were quickly gunned down. So maybe ZCP is responsible for the issue? I had tweaked the stalker and mutant spawns a bit in my previous playthrough - which I've done many times before without any issues whatsoever.
