For Merc, your focus will inevitably be to get better foot equipment. Three things to do:

• Buy hardware in concourses. Check them every time you land, sometimes they sell already upgraded equipment, it can be good for your start.
• Upgrade hardware in concourses. It requires cash and components, the components you get by going murderhobo in settlements and doing ground-focused missions, the kind you get in the concourse.
• Customise hardware, you need to find Engineers and get modifications from them.

My usual loadout is the Manticore Tormentor and the Karma L-6, @pale ingot.

Tormentor is a plasma handgun, very powerful, six shots per mag, think big-ass revolver, aim reasonably and you'll wreck NPCs easily. L-6 is a two-shot rocket launcher, great as well whenever you're a bit too far or when there are grouped enemies.
