Yellow triangle is kinda a chaos entity from a dimension that is the cause of all the weird in the town and surroundings, but he can't pass over. The weird dimension and normal world touch near gravity falls but the only way the weird can pass is through cracks (that also caused the alien ship to crash there cause they were curious).

Once Ford (who realized dimensional travel is possible due to his studies trying to make a teleporter) figured the town has this anomalous phenomena (weird stuff) he began researching it. The insane old dude helped him build a lot of the machines that are found throughout the show and once he was made aware of the chaos dimension he decided to erase his mind to forget the horror over and over again > made him insane.

The reason Ford went on his quest to find strange stuff was that his twin brother Stan ruined his chance for a scholarship at a place basically being MIT. So instead of cutting edge science he did some grassroots research with limited money, resources.

Ford wanted to cross the barrier after being tempted evil Dorrito's promise of knowledge and when he was ready to go his estranged brother (Grunkle Stan) managed to track him down and cause the machine to fail trapping him in the other world.
Because he felt responsible he took over the cabin, turned it into a tourist trap to make money and slowly repair the damage to the machine he caused to fail. Since he was a twin the people there didn't really notice that the loner in the woods has been replaced.

Fast forward the books the twins find are Ford's notebooks, and once they found all of them Stan went ahead with his plan to reopen the portal to rescue his brother. This gave triangle demon a chance to escape as well which led to the final confrontation.
