They buffed it.

So you are ALWAYS covered with chainmail at minimum.

If they get lucky and bypass the steel plate, they will hit chainmail. So there is still decent damage mitigation.

Heavy tempered steel plate armor gives like 60 protection. It basically makes you unkillable.

There are a few versions of the game, Bright Nights being the most popular alternative, because Dark Days Ahead focuses a lot on 'Realism' in a world that is quite literally falling about at the seams.
