When I had an issue with my rifle the first idea was that it's a .223 and we were firing 5.56 out of it and it caused a lot of jams (that's what a certified instructor said). In truth it was just dirty and the weapon is interchangeable between 5.56 and .223
So my guess is that it mostly just causes the gun to jam more often and maybe prolonged use of wrong caliber will cause some more permanent damage
