i think that there is absolutely something to be said about from soft's games losing some of their bite as they become less about forcing you to adapt to their worlds and less about struggle (elden ring isn't meant to be about struggle i don't think. dark souls is, thematically a far stronger aspect of the trilogy) but i think that whilst this has some merit in how the games feel experientially, you could absolutely break ds1 to shit we just didn't know about that stuff when we played those games . elden ring definitely doesn't feel as grim and oppressive and uncaring as dark souls or bloodborne did, but i don't think that was ever the goal with elden ring rly .
